Help with name.....

Post by nelmit » Sat Jul 30, 2005 10:22 am

Hello,

I've uploaded my gg gran's (Mary Jane Bell) death entry to the gallery. I've always been curious about her mum, Isabella's, previous name which is written as Naption.
I've never been able to find any info on William or Isabella so I don't think they ever moved from Ireland.

Any suggestions as to what Naption should be?

I can't do any better.

Unfortunately the Assistant Registrar has only completed this one entry on this page, so that the other two entries can't be taken as a guide to the style.

But if you look at Campbell, you'll see the same way of forming "p" ......

I concur with previous, it does look like Naption, and even without other similar entries to compare it with I am pretty sure it is a "N"

Thanks Davie and Stew for replies.

Naption is obviously what the registrar was told but I'd love to know what it really was.

Hullo there Annette!

How frustrating to have such a well written certificate and to be at a loss to know what the name is.!

I'm not familiar with Irish names, but did wonder if there was a surname ending in Seàn. That would give the "tion" sound. Sorry! It's all I have to offer. Hope Andy or IanS have an idea or two.

Hi Annette

Some time in the dim and distant past I found this link (must've come from the Scots People Discussion board as thats where I got most of my treasures before Talking Scot appeared)

http://www.imagepartners.co.uk/Thesaurus/

Its a surname thesaurus that can sometimes throw up some interesting takes on what you think might be a surname that you're looking for.

Have fun
