Emily Ruth COLQUHOUN 1868

Post by NormanE » Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:43 am

Emily Ruth was born in Warwickshire a PURTON in 1868. In 1906 she married the grandly named clergyman Lawrence Shafto Campbell COLQUHOUN. Lawrence S.C. Colquhoun died in Edinburgh 1933. I believe it is possible Emily brought her nephew up in Scotland and am looking for clues.
Emily Ruths nephew was Lawrence Humphrey Purton born 1908 in Canada and left motherless. My next contact occurs when Lawrence, now an Army Officer, returns on leave from India in 1939. His leave address is Enderley,Edinburgh Road, Peebles. it is from this address that Lawrence marries Hannah Curley in August 1939. Emily Ruth Colquhoun is a witness at the wedding and her Enderley address is given on the document.
Any information on Lawrence Humphreys upbringing or his aunt Ruth's life particularly after the 1939 marriage would be helpful and very much appreciated.
Thank You

Hi Norman

A search for "Purton Lawrence Humphrey" on Google book search ( http://books.google.com/ ) , brings up a number of hits
which suggest someone of this name was at Armstrong College, University of Durham about 1931 and became a barrister ?

The Times of Feb 02, 1953 has an "in memorium " for Emily Ruth Campbell Colquhoun - she died Feb 1st 1952. Doesn't say where. But I don't see her on Scotlands People - perhaps she died in England?

Hope this helps
Sally

Dear Sally
Thank you for the two further clues you have provided.
Family folklore said Lawrence was a Barrister. Your clue and Times Law Examination reports 1949 to 1961 confirm this. The Times references include a BA Durham. He appears to have soldiered after his Durham degree and then picked his legal practice up after WW2. I have him as a captain in 1939 and a Lt Colonel after the war.
As you say, Can't find Emily's death place. Its not in the English lists either.
Thanks again for your interest and help.
Norman

Hi Norman

On Ancestry.co.uk , the death indexes for England and Wales are not yet transcribed for that period - but knowing the date of death you can find the right page of indexes :
There was an "Emily R C Colquhoun" aged 84 who died 1st Quarter 1952 in Rowley Regis (Staffordshire) . The reference is Volume 9b Page 338 .

Sally
Brilliant and thank you very much. I now realise I had looked in the death index but in the wrong year. I have smacked my hand for stupidity.
Lawrence was in this general area, either at Wolverhampton or Church Stretton, at this time so it reinforces my feeling that Emiy was his surrogate mother.

Hello Norman,

I’m not sure whether you have these for L. H. Purton.

The Times has a notice of a 1984 second marriage at Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk etc.

The London Gazette has at least 6 entries for him 1929 – 1991. http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/search

Dear Allan
Yet another helpful message about Lawrence Purton. thank you very much.
The only reference I haven't been able to find is the 1991 one, the year Lawrence died.
Your references are very near to home compared with the trail I have followed from Newcastle to Australia to Canada back to Australia to Scotland to Burma and then three locations in the UK. Challenging but certainly interesting.
Again thank you.
Regards
Norman
