DON Family

Post by UncleFester550 » Wed Aug 05, 2009 11:03 pm

Hello, I'm looking to further my knowledge of my ancestry.

I am Malcolm Don and am looking for information on anybody related to Alexander Don b:1843 Ruthven? married 1866, Margaret Douglas b:1842 Coupar Angus.

If anybody has information on they're parents etc, I'd be very grateful.

Hi Malcolm
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D
Have you looked for the marriage of your Alexander Don in 1866? If he married in Scotland, his parents' names should be given on the marriage entry. Try a search on ScotlandsPeople if you have not dine so already. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is a pay-per-view site, free to join and search, but for a small fee you can view digital copies of the original entries.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi, Yup I have a copy of the marriage cert and I have the parents names, but I haven't been able to get any further back.

I have Alexander's father as George Don and mother Catherine McKay, George died before 1866.

Margaret's parents were: Thomas Douglas and Margaret Urquhart.

I have no DOB's or marriages etc for either set of parents and that's what I'm after

Hi Malcolm
Have you searched for the family in any census? That should give you places of birth and ages and help you move backwards in time. The 1851 might be a good one to start with as you do know the age Alexander is likely to be and chidlren are often easier to find than adults.

Have you searched for a marriage for the parents? It will be before Statutory Registration (in 1855) so may not give you much information, but it is worth checking. e.g. on the IGI at www.familysearch.org there is a possible marriage for Thomas Douglas and Maragret Urquhart in 1835, Coupar Angus.

Best wishes
Lesley

I have a copy of the marriage cert
What church did they marry in? Just wondering if they were not Church of Scotalnd but maybe Free Church?
The church will be mentioned in the first column.

Best wishes

I know they got married in Coupar Angus, I'm reg'd and searched with most genealogy sites, have been 4 last 10+ yrs.

My main prob is finances atm, I've got hold of various certs, but no extra joy on dates, locations etc. I have checked the census but was never successful in my search

Hi, thanks for that.

That's amazing and so quick, I was never able to find that in all the years I've been trying.

Do you know who Margaret McVicar, Christina Watt and James Thomson are in relation?

Are you any relation?

No relationship - the girls were lodgers and James a servant.

If you search FREECEN there is an Ann McKay living at Ruthven in 1841 of the correct age but I don't see a Catherine.

Out of interest did Alexander give an occupation for his father George?

Annette
