Does anyone have a missing Hugh MacDonald (or Mc)?? My ancestor Hugh, moved to Newcatle-Upon-Tyne somewhere between his birth (1846-1848) and his marriage. His father is also called Hugh and was a Cooper. All census and certificate records I have of him state he was born in Scotland, but I don't know where.
If anyone can shed some light on this I would be much appreciated, I've exhausted all possibilities that I can think of.
Thanks.
Hugh Mac(Mc)Donald b.1846-1848 Scotland

Hugh Mac(Mc)Donald b.1846-1848 Scotland
He married Elizabeth Lamb in the November of 1868 in Horton in the County of Northumberland, and has 6 children: James (1870-1920), Isabel (1872), Elizabeth (1874), Margaret A (1877), Hugh (1878), and Mary (1888).
In 1871 he is living in Willington in Northumberland,
In 1881 he is living in Deptfort, St Pauls in London
In 1891 he is living in St. Nicholas, Northumberland
In 1901 he is living in Gateshead, Durham
And he dies in 1908 in the Union Workhouse in Gateshead.
He was a Bricklayer by trade.
All I know about his birth is the estimated birth year from the census' and cetificates (1846-1848), his fathers name (Hugh), and his father's occupation (Cooper).

Have you looked for him in the 1861 census or before?
I can't see any obvious Hugh & Hugh combinations on FreeCen, but you there are 5/6 possibilities on ScotlandsPeople for 1851/61 - you can search for 2 forenames in the same household there.
FreeCen did throw up an Apprentice Cooper Hugh McDonald in 1841:
Piece: SCT1841/562 Place: Eastwood -Renfrewshire Enumeration District: 9a
Civil Parish: Eastwood Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 10 Page: 6
Address: Pollockshaws Factory St
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MCDONALD John M 40 Bleach Field Worker Ireland
MCDONALD Ann F 30 Ireland
MCDONALD Hugh M 15 Appren Cooper Outside Census County (1841)
MCDONALD James M 12 Appren Dyer Outside Census County (1841)
MCDONALD John M 10 Calico Print Tearer Outside Census County (1841)
MCDONALD Martha F 8 Outside Census County (1841)
MCDONALD Charles M 6 Outside Census County (1841)
MCDONALD Jean F 1m Renfrewshire
HOY Elisabeth F 20 Bleach Field Worker Ireland
HUTTON Rosie F 20 Bleach Field Worker Ireland
DOWIE Cathrin F 20 Bleach Field Worker Ireland
I wonder what happened to him?
He might be this unmarried lodger in 1851:
MCDONALD Hugh Lodger U M 25 Journeyman Cooper Renfrewshire - Pollockshaws
At 13 Nelson Street, Gorbals -Lanarkshire .
Nothing conclusive, but maybe looking for the family in Scotland or England via the censuses would help?

I have looked for him and came up with the results you have found. I couldn't say it wasn't them but on the other hand I couldn't say it was, without his mothers name I can't accuretly place them on a census. I also looked at the baptisms on scotlandspeople but again with so little information I am disinclined to use it until I have further proof that they are correct. I have also contacted durham record office, to see if they hold any records that might give me more information but they haven't.
So until I get a new lead I'm effectively stuck.
Thanks for looking Wonka

Doesn't his death certificate give his mother's name.amac24 wrote:And he dies in 1908 in the Union Workhouse in Gateshead.

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)
