Esdale/Easdale

Post by laura24 » Sun Aug 16, 2009 12:22 pm

Hi,

Does anyone have any information on the Esdale/Easdale from Dunbarton?

My grandad is an Esdale, however on his fathers death certificate and marriage certificate the name was actually Easdale!!

Would anyone know why this may have changed or point me in the right direction as i cannot seem to find a birth record for david easdale either!!

Hi Annette,

David is my Great Grandad, on my grandad Gerald's birth they are both Esdale, in 1930.

David married Letitia Pearson in 1916, he was 24 and she was 21, on their wedding certificate they are Easdale - his parents are William Easdale and Elizabeth Caldwell

Yet in 1932 when he died he is David Easdale!

not sure if that was the information you were asking for

Hi Laura,

Is this your William and Elizabeth in the 1891 and 1901 Censuses?

If so, they are using the "Easdale" version of the name in those years.

It does sound like it could be them but, David should then be on the 1901 census with the, as the info on davids marriage certificate says he should of been born around 1892 - i have searched for him but cannot find him!!!

according to the same certificate william was a ironmoulder and david worked in the shipyards.

Hi Laura,

There were 17 Easdale and 1 Esdale born in Dunbartonshire from 1885 to 1900. None was a David. 12 of these were registered in Old Kilpatrick. Could David have originally been registered under a different name? Take your pick of the selection on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk if you have any way of narrowing them down.

Where and when were William Easdale and Elizabeth Caldwell married?

There is a marriage of a William Easdale (rivetter) to Elizabeth McArthur, in the right place, and an Isabella born to them at the right time to be the family found in the censuses quoted above.

All the best,

AndrewP

As Andrew suggested, David could have originally been registered under a different name or might have been staying with a relative on the night of the census. They may have assumed that his parents would have put him on their form instead.

Or there were two different William and Elizabeth Easdale families in the area. Elizabeth McArthur and Elizabeth Caldwell. Food for thought.

There is also this family living at Antrim, Ireland in 1911 -

Esdale William 48 Male
Esdale Elizabeth 45 Female
Esdale Robert 24 Male
Esdale William John 22 Male
Esdale David 19 Male
Esdale Samuel Alexander 14 Male

I can see a marriage of an Elizabeth Caldwell at Coleraine in 1883. On the same page there is a William Esdale. http://pilot.familysearch.org

A free cross check at Emerald Ancestors shows a William Esdale marrying an Elizabeth and an Elizabeth Caldwell marrying a William in 1883. I think this is why you can't find any details of the family at Scotland.

Annette
