Duncan McDonald

Post by neobliviscaris » Tue Sep 01, 2009 3:11 pm

I'm trying to trace my Great Grandfather after the 1891 census. He was born 1849 at Kilmuir in Skye then appeared in Glasgow as a day policeman , I'd like to know about the years between his birth and the 1891 census, also the years after 1891 to his death.

If his parents are Donald and Catherine Stewart then he is transcribed as MacDonald in 1851 and 1861 (still at Kilmuir).

1851 Census form FREECEN-

Piece: SCT1851/112 Place: Kilmuir -Inverness-shire Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Kilmuir Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 88 Page: 15 Schedule: 46
Address: Feaull

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MACDONALD Donald Head M M 30 Shoemaker Employing No Ap Inverness-shire - Portree
MACDONALD Catharine Wife M F 27 Shoemaker's Wife Inverness-shire - Kilmuir
MACDONALD Mary Dau U F 4 Inverness-shire - Kilmuir
MACDONALD Duncan Son - M 2 Inverness-shire - Kilmuir
MACDONALD Alexr Son - M 5m Inverness-shire - Kilmuir
STEWART Euphemia Ma-Law - F 71 Pauper Formerly Ag Lab's Wife Inverness-shire - Kilmuir

By 1871 he had moved to Glasgow.

In 1901 Duncan is absent from the household and Margaret (Maggie) is on her own with children, wife of a Detective Officer.

Glasgow City Council hold Police Archives. Perhaps if you contact them they will find his service records.

Regards,
Annette

Actually all this has been posted on the basis of who I think he is on census records. Did he marry a Margaret and had daughters called Agnes and Margaret?
