A wright works in a ??

Post by marypryde » Wed Sep 09, 2009 8:57 pm

In an 1841 census of Largo, Fife, I have a gentleman named Walter Anderson with the occupation of wright. I am trying to make out the name of his residence. It looks like Teaper or Teapot or Teases Colfrey/Colpry/Cofry. Am thinking that the second word may be the establishment in which a wright does his work. Can't find the answer to that on my own. The word is certainly not joinery.

SP Ref: Census 1841 443/00 005/00 007 (forward 2)

Any bright ideas? Thanks,
Mary Ellen

Hi Mary Ellen
There is a place called Teasses Mill in the area - it is north of Largo. Don't know what the Colfrey/Colpry/Cofry might be without seeing it.
These days it is a farm I think.

Best wishes
Lesley

Teasses was a Colliery so it's possibe what you're looking at is an abbreviation for that.

Lesley and Lindsay - thank you both. I believe you have straightened me out. Teasses colliery (or Teasses whatever) would make sense now that I see it on a map - not far from the Woodside census area I was working with.
