My wife and I are interested in making contact with anyone researching the Muir family in Orkney. In particular, we are keen to learn more about gt gt grandfather Stephen Muir who married Margaret Peace at Kirkwall in 1835.

Hi Ron and Susan,
I'm not researching Muirs, but I had a look at the census records. This looks like your family in 1841:
1841 Scotland Census 1841 Scotland Census
Name: Stephen Muir
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1811
Gender: Male
Where born: Orkney and Shetland, Scotland
Civil parish: Kirkwall and St Ola
County: Orkney and Shetland
Address: Cathrine Place
Occupation: Boatman
Parish Number: 21
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
James Muir 40
Margret Muir 35
Margret Muir 15
William Muir 13
John Muir 11
Thomas Muir 5
Stephen Muir 30
Margret Muir 30
Mary Muir 4
David Muir 2
Andrew Muir
I also found them in 1851. It appears that there are several Muir families living at Catherine Place in Kirkwall. Andrew is 10 mons. old. I missed his age when I was highlighting.
Can you tell us what information you have already and where you have looked?

Susan,
I was just looking at your Muirs on the IGI at http://www.familysearch.org
There are possible parents for both Stephen and Margaret, the problem being that all of the Muirs and Peaces seem to be using the same half dozen first names! You certainly have a merry mess to sort out! Don't hesitate to ask us for more help!
