Hello dimac,
There are a number of other children in the 1851 census that you have:

1851
Redrock, Latheron, Caithness
William Sutherland, 50, born Clyne, Sutherland, Farmer of 6 Ac & Mason
Christy Sutherland, 50, Wife, born Kildonan, Sutherland
Ann Sutherland, 22, Daughter, born Latheron, Caithness
Donald Sutherland, 21, Son, born Latheron, Caithness, Mason
John Sutherland, 16, Son, born Latheron, Caithness, Farm Labourer
Catherine Sutherland, 14, Daughter, born Latheron, Caithness, Scholar
Jamesina Sutherland, 19, Daughter, born Latheron, Caithness, Scholar
Alexr Sutherland, 18, Son, born Latheron, Caithness, Farm Labourer
Lauchlan Corner, 32, Lodger, born Knockbain, Rosshire, Clockvender

This is the family in 1841, I believe, although some ages are off. There are a few more children:

1841
Brehungy, Latheron, Caithness
Wm Sutherland, 40, born Scotland, Mason
Christian Sutherland, 40, born Scotland
Mary Sutherland, 15, born Caithness
Elizabeth Sutherland, 15, born Caithness
Anne Sutherland, 13, born Caithness
Alexander Sutherland, 10, born Caithness
John Sutherland, 9, born Caithness
Catherine Sutherland, 4, born Caithness

Going forward, both William and Christian are still alive in 1861, so lived into the Statutory Records era:

1861
Red Rock, Latheron, Caithness
William Sutherland, 60, Head, born Brora, Sutherland, Mason
Christy Sutherland, 52, born Kildonnan, Sutherland, Mason Wife
Catherine Sutherland, 19, Daughter, born Latheron, Caithness, Domestic Servant
Janet Sutherland, 4, granddaughter, born Glasgow

This is good news, because you can download their death certificates and their parents' names should be on the certificates, thus allowing you to go back another generation.

All the best,
Sarah

Is this the family now living in South Leith in 1871, ages again off (Catherine doesn't appear to age at all  )?

1871
Cranstons Land, Leith South, Midlothian
William Sutherland, 60, Head, born Clyne, Sutherlandshire, Mason (journeyman)
Christina Sutherland, 60, Wife, born Kildonan,, Sutherlandshire, Masons Wife
Catherine Sutherland, 26, Daughter, born Latheron, Caithness, Agricultural Servant

In that case, you have a new place to look for their deaths. I don't see them offhand in 1881, so try looking between 1871 and 1881.

Good luck!
Sarah

They have a few more children with them in 1851 -

William Sutherland 50
Christy Sutherland 50
Ann Sutherland 22
Donald Sutherland 21 Mason
John Sutherland 16
Catherine Sutherland 14
Jamesina Sutherland 19
Alexr Sutherland 18
Lauchlan Corner 32

They are still at the same address in 1861 -

William Sutherland 60 Brora, Sutherland
Christy Sutherland 52 Kildonan, Sutherland
Catherine Sutherland 19
Janet Sutherland 4 grandaughter, Glasgow

Hopefully their death records should show parents names.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Sarah,

Didn't think to look for them outwith Latheron after 1861 (tut tut). Strangely enough Leith is where my Sutherlands from Latheron/Golspie ended up in the 1870s.

Best wishes,
Annette

Any connection to dimac's lot? Or perhaps there was just a big exodus down there for some reason. There are certainly a bewildering number of Sutherlands with the same first names

No I don't think there's a connection. Trying to unravel the Sutherlands (and Frasers  ) in that area is a nightmare but it can be done!! :D

Hi Sarah & Nelmit,

Thank you for all your great census lookups for me.
The above Sutherlands were given to me when I was at the Dunbeath Heritage Centre
in Sept '08 after being told about them from a helpful GR members before I left NZ.
Now after all your hard work I don't think they are the correct ones.. so dreadfully
sorry about that.

Why we all thought they probably were, was my g.g.grandmother was Christina
Sutherland b:c 1838 Dunbeath Latheron(family bible) with parents Wm Sutherland & Christian
Sutherland formerly Sutherland from her deat cert. Christina came to NZ on the
"Lincoln" in 1867 on her lonesome but was married 1868 in Christchurch from the
home of a Mr Sutherland.

Will copy what you have both very generously given me...just in case.
Thank you,
Dimac

Hi....back again.....

Just a thought but do you both feel Catherine could be Christina..dates fit in well.

Also when Christina S married in 1868 (John McLauchlan) their only daughter
was called Catherine (Kat/Kit).
Perhaps Catherine in 1851 census preferred to be called Christina?

Value your opinions.
Thankyou,
Di
