Campbells who lived at 48 Polmadie Rd, Glasgow
Hi Everyone,
I am searching for information re my Grandmother (Mary Campbell dob 1893) daughter of Robert Reed Gabriel Campbell (railway yardsman) and Margaret Johnstone Campbell (nee Munro) She married a Thomas G Monteith of 104 Port Glasgow Rd, Greenock in 1909 (I believe there was at least 1 child possibly 2)
She emigrated to Australia between 1911-1918 (on her own and married my grandfather about 1919)- I would love to find some info re her family - from the 1910 census she had brothers Alexander and Hugh and sisters Annie,Maggie and Christina (who later lived in Rutherglen I believe) The address for the family in 1901 census is 48 Polmadie Road, Glasgow
I will be in the UK next May - any ideas as to where to start looking?
Regards,
Robyn

Hello Robyn,
Welcome to![[talkingscot] [talkingscot]](./images/smilies/talkingscot.png)
Where to look depends a bit on what you are looking for. If you want to go backwards, you can do much of that before you go and thus have a better idea of the places you'd like to visit.
Do you already have Robert and Margaret's marriage certificate? If so, that should give their parents' names and you can follow them back, using the censuses to help you locate the year and place of birth, marriage and death of parents, grandparents, etc. as far back as you can. Those certificates will help fill in the details. All these can be found at ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk.
If I have the right family, you are VERY lucky that Robert's father has an unusual name, Hector, so it makes disambiguating the many Campbells quite a bit easier! If you get stuck anywhere, just ask on the forum-- we love a challenge!
If you are hoping to trace your grandmother's siblings forward and find living people, we can't help on the forum. You would need to book a seat at the Scotland's People Centre in Edinburgh and spend the day tracking them all down. The recent certificates can't be seen online, but you can look at them at the Centre.
All the best,
Sarah

Just in case Sarah.
Glasgow Herald, Monday, October 19, 1868
Hector Campbell, Warehouseman, met with an accident.
Aberdeen Weekly Journal, Tuesday, September 19, 1893
Hector Campbell, Railway Stoker, met with an accident.
And Robyn, if you are ever looking for people from Greenock don’t forget to try the Watt Library BMD index and newspaper index etc at http://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/AtoZ.aspx?id=284
All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Just to prove that although not that common a name, there were still a number of Hector Campbells about!
If I have the right man, he would have been in the Edinburgh area in 1868, although he came to Greenock (judging by the birth places of his children) by 1873. Does it say where the accident took place? He was called a labourer in 1871, a carter in 1881, a railway carter (getting closer to the 1893 occupation!) in 1891 and a simple carter again in 1901. Was the one reported in the Aberdeen Weekly Journal an accident occurring in Aberdeen, or elsewhere? I assume none of the accidents were fatal, since it appears that he outlived his wife by 24 years, dying at the age of 85. Again, I'm guessing from playing with the Scotland's People search function-- haven't looked at any of those certs. He had a son Hector as well, but he was a shopkeeper, so I don't think either of the accidents could have happened to him.
Cheers,
Sarah

Re: Campbells who lived at 48 Polmadie Rd, Glasgow
Hello Robyn & Sarah,
The 1868 accident report in the Glasgow Herald about the Warehouseman describes how he was found lying insensible on the deck of the smack “Julia Hoyes” at the harbour. He had sustained severe injuries on the face. He had lain for a considerable time in the cold night air and was still unconscious many hours after being found.
In the 1893 event the Stoker appears to have forgotten to duck as the train went through a tunnel. It happened between Barrhead and Neilston on the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway. He received a severe contusion of the head and was taken home semi-conscious.
If the writing of the place on the Marriage certificate isn’t clear could it be Sailors’ Hall? The Caledonian Mercury, in 1819, mentions the sale of a Sloop taking place within the Sailors’ hall, Kincardine. The same newspaper, in 1829, has an Advertisement about a house for sale in Chapel Street, Kincardine. It’s described as being nearly opposite to the Sailors’ Hall.
All the best,
Alan

Anne's death and a few of the childrens' marriages are in the Watt Library BMD index. Also about five births of children to Hector, the son, and his wife in the early 1900's.
Judging by the fairly recent info available on Familysearch it would seem that someone is actively researching these lines.
