I Have just registered with TalkngScot.com. I have been researching my family since 2005 and I am registered with several genealogical websites. I'm hoping that someone can help me with a couple of my longstanding 'brickwalls' relating to the same family.
1. Finlay Jackson, born 1851 in the Glassary/Ardrishaig area of Argyll. Father, John Jackson (a shoemaker) and mother Flora Jackson (m.n. McNair). Finlay appears in the 1861 and 1871 censuses living with his parents and various siblings. In 1871 he is 19 and a fisherman by occupation. After 1871 there is no further trace of him whatsoever. I have checked for him in England and done my level best to track down any possible emigration record but with no luck in either case.
2. Mary Jackson (Finlay's sister), born Argyll 1853. In 1880 Mary married Thomas Edward Angus Allen Shaw (also of the Argyll area) in Newcastle-upon -Tyne. They both settled and brought up a family in Sunderland. Mary appears in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses but not, I have been informed, in the 1911 census. I have checked the Free BMD death index for the relevant areas but there are no entries for a Mary Shaw that matches the right age of 'my' Mary. Thomas Shaw died in Sunderland in 1930. I am not sure whether this is relevant to my first inquiry but Mary and Thomas named their last child, born 1897 Finlay.
I would be very grateful for any feedback about these brickwalls.
Thank you
Doddie

Hello Doddie,
Welcome to Talking Scot!
Have you seen this death from http://www.freebmd.org.uk
Jun 1909
SHAW May 54 Sunderland 10a 381
I know the age is a little off and the name not exact but it could be worth a call to the local record office.
Best wishes,
Meg

Hi Meg, thank you for getting in touch. You're right, this entry does merit further investigation. The missing 'R' might simply be a typo somewhere along the line. Will let you know How I get on.

Doddie
