Army Pensioner from WW1?

Post by Dennis » Tue Jan 12, 2010 11:09 pm

Hello,

I have, according to his 1945 death record, an Army Pensioner. I'm assuming his pension was for something that happened in WW1. He was born in 1894 and so I figure he was in WW1. I gather that there must be a record of his service that survived the bombing of WW2. Where can I locate information on his service?

Regards. dennis

Hi Dennis
If he was from the ordinary ranks, then Ancestry is worth a shot - there are service records there for privates and the like from WW1. You need to bear in mind that only about 40% of these records survived the WW2 bombing. Check your local library - if you do not have a subscription, you may find you can get Ancestry access there.

If he was an officer, I don't think there are any records online - a visit to Kew would be required. Or hiring a researcher if you are at some distance away.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Thank you for the reply. Is there any specific location having to do just with the pension part of it; ie would his widow have had continued to receive his pension after he passed in 1945? She died in 1970 aged 76. Was over in London last November but only for a week; going back this fall for 2 weeks:)

Hi Dennis
There are what are apparently misnamed as the Pension Recrdos. See:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1114
- if you scroll down you can see a description of the records.
But also see:
