Descendants of John Cruickshank and Agnes Dawson

Post by lwcruickshank » Mon Jan 18, 2010 5:52 am

I am searching for information about the families (and/or their descendants) of John Cruickshank and Agnes Dawson, (my ggg grand-parents) who married at Closeburn, Dumfriesshire on 4/8/1820.

They had at least two children, Agnes and George.

Agnes CruickshanK was born about 1825 at Closeburn, she married James Ramage on 30/12/1851 at Sorn, Ayrshire and died at Catrine, Ayrshire on 26/3/1920.

George Cruickshank (my gg grandfather) was born at Sorn, Ayrshire in about 1836 and died at Carlisle, Cumberland, England in 1878. He married Janet Tweedie Whyte (or White)(born on 17/1/1838 at Tynron, Dumfriesshire) on 19/12/1856 at Moffat, Dumfriesshire. George and Janet had several children :-
Agnes Cruickshank born Torthorald, Dumfriesshire on 14/3/1858
Robert Watson Cruickshank born at Torthorald on 13/9/1859
Jessie Cruickshank born at Torthorald on 24/3/1861
John Cruickshank (my g grandfather) born at Torthorald on 13/4/1863

The family moved to Carlisle, Cumberland, England between 1863 and 1867 as the 1871 English Census had them living in Carlisle. Neither Robert nor Jessie were recorded in the 1871 English Census and at least Jessie can be presumed to have died in Scotland before the move as indeed probably could Robert.
There were at least two further children born in England :-
George Cruickshank born at Carlisle, Cumberland in 1867
Jessie Cruickshank born at Carlisle in 1872.

John Cruickshank my g.grandfather migrated to Melbourne, Australia in June 1890 and died in Melbourne in 1933

George Cruickshank married Jeanie (or Jeannie)Gemmell (born in Scotland about 1862) at Beith, Ayrshire on 30/12/1887 and subsequently moved back to Carlilse about 1890. George and Jeanie had two children at the 1891 English Census , Jeanie (or Jeannie) Cruickshank born in Scotland about 1889 and Lily Cruickshank born at Carlisle in 1891.

The 1881 English Census had Janet (now widowed) living with her children in Carlisle. There is no record of Janet dying in England and it is assumed that she returned to live in Scotland before the 1891 English Census was taken.

George and his wife Jeanie do not appear in English Censuses after the 1891 English Census and they too may have gone back to Scotland.

I would appreciate any assistance that can be given

Lance Cruickshank :)

Hi Lance
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D
The 1881 English Census had Janet (now widowed) living with her children in Carlisle. There is no record of Janet dying in England and it is assumed that she returned to live in Scotland before the 1891 English Census was taken.
Have you checked the 1891 census in Scotland for Janet? Or the 1901 for George and his wife Jeanie? You can find the census on Scotlands People (a pay per view site, original images), Ancestry have transcriptions and Freecen so far have 100% of Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire for 1841 and are 93.8% complete for Ayrshire for 1851 so worth trying there first for the earlier census data which may give you Agnes & George as small children with their parents.

Remember too that the names Janet and Jessie are interchangeable.

In 1881, are they the family at Botchergate, Cumberland? Janet is a Bakehouse Keeper (Baker) with daughter Agnes an assistant baker?

Best wishes
Lesley

As a start, you have probably already found George in 1851, an Ag Lab at Barr Farm in Saquhar, Dumfriesshire. He says he was born in Catrine, Ayrshire.

1851 Matthew is a shopman, living with a "cousin", John Thomson and family at 9 Green St, Calton, Lanark. More family to track down :D

Could this be mother Agnes in Calton, still close enough to watch over her youngest child while he is staying and working at the cousin's shop?

1851
5 William St, Calton, Lanarkshire
Agness Cruickshank, 45, Head, born Glasgow, Lanark, Formerly Weaver

All the best,
Sarah

This looks like George and family in 1901 living at Stranraer -

George Cruickshank 35 b England, Railway Engine Driver
Jeannie Cruickshank 58 wife (as transcribed at Ancestry) b Kilbirnie, Ayrshire
Jeannie Cruickshank 12
George Cruickshank 7
Reobt Cruickshank 4
Agnes Cruickshank 1

There is also a death indexed at Scotlands People of a Janet Cruickshanks/White at Stranraer in 1916.

Regards,
Annette
