James Pirie - Nigg, Kincardineshire

Post by srobp » Fri Jan 22, 2010 6:06 pm

Hi,

I am searching for information on James Pirie born 1807 in Nigg, Kincardineshire.

I have traced a James Pirie born 1810 Nigg, Kincardineshire to North Leith in the 1851 Census. He was married to Jane (Jean) Beath, had several children and was working as an Officer of Customs. He then appears in the 1861 Census still in North Leith working as an Outdoor Officer in HMC. There is no sign of him or his wife in the 1871 Census and I can not find any deaths in SP. Any ideas on how I can pursue this?

Hi srobp
...and welcome to Talking Scot. :D

Looks like the couple were married 1 March 1842, Barony, Lanark
- any sign of him in the 1841 in that area?

Using the parent search on IGI I've come up with these as possible children:
WILLIAM PIRRIE - birth 20 DEC 1842 Barony, Lanark
JAMES PIRRIE - Christening 27 MAR 1848 North Leith, Midlothian
JOHN PIRIE - birth 14 APR 1855 Leith, Midlothian
MARGARET PIRIE - birth 14 APR 1855 Leith, Midlothian
DAVID BEATH PIRIE Christening: APR 1845 North Leith, Midlothian

I take it you already have copies of the the 1855 birth entries? If not that would probably be worth downloading as there is likely to be extra info given on the birth entry, it being the first year of statutory registration.

There is a death of a Jane Beath other name Pirie in 1862 in Leith on SP - is that not her? The death entry, if it is the correct person, should tell you if she was a wife of or widow of which may help you find James.

Best wishes
Lesley

Greetings Denise.

If you can not spot "send a PM" Joette is referring to the little PM icon that appears on your screen under the poster's details. At the right of the post of interest. The Moderators format is slightly different to us mere mortals.

All the best.

Oh dear, Alan... do you mean to say that we are immortal? I was counting on my mortality to get to the bottom of some of my genealogical puzzles, assuming that the folks on the "other side" would have some answers for me  Don't relish the thought of going on forever banging my head on the same walls ](*,) Ouch!
