James Richmond

Post by Wee Ann » Sat Jan 30, 2010 11:53 pm

Back in 2007 I was helped enormously by people who I can only regard as friends on this site, with finding the family of my great grandmother Jane Richmond. Her parents were James Ricmond and Mary McEachen, married in Inverness in 1846. I found them on census and "assumed" (there goes that word again!) that all ten chidren were the offspring of 'my' Mary and James.

Recently I was contacted by a lovely lady with information I did not have. The child born after Jane, James is one of her ancestors, and his mother was Mary McDonald! (She has both his marriage and death certificates with her name on them).

Reading only the census, with no further direct contact, it looks like Mary, wife of James and all the little Richmonds. Now I find that Mary McEachen may have died giving birth to my great grandmother (or shortly after), and the Mary on the census was a totally different person.

I have looked for a death for Mary McEachen, but we have had several spellings of her name, and I have had no luck with that.

I would most appreciative if someone could help with this. I really don't know where to go from here.

Best regards
Ann

Hello Ann,

These children were all born to James Richmond and Mary McEachan the last one being in 1865 so I don't think the person with the other info is correct-

Age and place are out but there is a Mary Richmond/McEachen age 58 death indexed at SP in 1885 at Dennistoun, Glasgow. Worth a check? :?

Thank you Annette for your swift reply.
I agree that our information appears sound, but if the next wife's name was ' Mary' too, then it casts doubt on what we think we know. There is a gap of four years between the births of Jane and James, ample time for one wife to die and be replaced.
The information that I recieved recently sounds good too.
Father James Richmond - Gamekeeper - Knockie House
I wouldn't have expected there to be another James Richmond at the same address inside the same timeframe.
I have Jane's marriage certificate (copy), but I haven't looked for the ones of the other offspring of James and Mary.
I already know that he was married before, to Eliza Harrison, to whom his first two children (John and Thomasina) were born. At that time, Mary McEachen was a servant in his house.
A man with five children is as much in need of a mother for them as a man with two.
I don't know! It all hapened a long time ago, but I am really interested in what went on with this family.
I must keep looking!
Thanks again for your input.

Sorry Annette,
I thought I was answering two different people. That will teach me to read things properly.

If, as you say, the other children are all registered to Mary McEachen, then I am totally flummoxed!

I will have to get back to my informant and see if she can come up with some kind of explanation.
Thank you again for trying to help me.

I have not been let down on this site when I have asked for help, and today was no different,
Thank you
