Surgical Boot Makers.....

Post by gfinknottle » Sun Aug 14, 2005 10:07 pm

One of my ancestors in the 1860s in Glasgow was a surgical boot maker. Is this likely to have been in a Trades Directory or were boot and shoe makers too far down the social ladder to be listed?

G., I have a boot maker in my family tree; a great uncle in Perth.

Kind regards,

Practically all the brothers of my ggg grandfather Andrew Spence were boot and/or shoe makers in Perth and most are listed in the Perth directories from 1837 onwards, so it's well worth a look.

Were there trade directories in the 1950s?

I'm not saying this just because i come from a long line of boot and shoe makers including a boot sprigger whatever that is, but their skills were highly regarded in their day. They even had their own patron saint. I will try and find his name again if you like.
If you look at "The Statistical Accounts of Scotland" for the period and parish relevant to your people you may turn up a list of all local trades people active at the time. You can do this on-line. It worked for me. If nothing else, they make a riveting read. As for trade directories, i think the local library or family history centre will hold that sort of stuff.

I think the patron saint of shoemakers is St. Crispin. -saints day 25th October. Enjoying the site -missed the discussion group on S.P. but this site fills the gap nicely. Best wishes to all
