Mary Stewart - Mystery Ancestor

Post by darylrodger » Sun Feb 28, 2010 11:27 pm

Hi,

I have an ancestor named Mary King (nee Stewart) who is proving to be difficult to find :? . She was married to Hugh King (b. 29 Apr 1789 in Beith, Ayrshire), and had a son called John on 21st June 1811. I can't find their marriage, or any other children born to Hugh & Mary.

Hugh married a second time on 12 Dec 1834 to Robina Allan, so I assume that Mary must have died sometime before then.

Any ideas ](*,) ?

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

As usual just questions first.

Do you know for certain that Hugh and Mary were married? Have you looked at Hugh's death entry and if so what does it say about his wife/wives? The only birth I can see to this couple is a submission - John King or Stewart which suggests he was illegitimate. (Later - I see the bith is indexed at SP as King right enough so was it a legitimate birth?)

I see a John King, married to Fanny at Beith in 1841 etc - is this your John?

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,

Thanks for that.

Yes, I knew that John was legitimate as I found his birth on SP under King. I have already tried looking for further births on family search without luck.

Hugh married Robina Allan on 12 Dec 1834, so Mary must have died prior to that date.

According to Hugh's death cert on 28 June 1864 in Mauchline, there's no mention of Mary.

His son John's death cert only mentions Mary's maiden name, even though the informant was his son John! :o

Hi again Daryl,

Have you actually looked at John's birth entry?

I see Hugh and Robina on census records but how do you know this is John's father?

More ***** questions! :)

Annette
