Perthshire, Scotland, Militia Survey, 1802
This is now on Ancestry.com --hadn't seen it before, so I suppose it's new. You can see the actual images. It would be nice if they had this for the whole of Scotland!
Perthshire, Scotland, Militia Survey, 1802
In 1802 a form was sent out to householders within the Burgh of Perth requiring them to list the name of every man in their house aged 18 to 45, who was liable for service with the militia. The returns may include:
Name of the householder
Occupation of the householder
Street address
Names of any inhabitants eligible for service
Names of women appear only if they are the householder.
All the best,
Sarah

Hello Sarah,
I thought a few of the people with Perth ancestors would have jumped into action when they saw your posting. It sounds like pretty interesting stuff.
Unless I’ve forgotten somebody, I don’t think I’ve so far come across a single Scot on my tree with any sort of a military connection prior to WW1.
All the best,
Alan

Hi Sarah
I have only just seen your post owing to work commitments. I have been searching for one of my ancestors for years, the only confirmed piece of paper I
have on him is the 1841 census which his occupation is given as Army Pensioner.
I have about 4 poss records from kew due to age and time span.
This gentleman was livivg in the Ross Comrie Perthshire as I have the OPR records for some of his children the only one I don't have is my direct ancestor,
if you have access to the Perthshire Militia records could you perhaps have a look for a certain alien named Ronald McDonald.
many thanks
Yours Aye

Hi Bruce,
The only one I see is unlikely, if yours was in the 1841 census. There is a Ronald McDonald, Teacher High Street Perth, who claimed exemption from the Militia in 1802 because he was at least 60 years of age.
Regards,
Sarah

Hello Bruce,
It seems that Ancestry’s Perth Militia records are only for the Burgh of Perth. I’m not sure how Ross Comrie fits into the picture.
The Perth & Kinross Archives has a number of online Perthshire Militia databases that may be worth a look.

I read about these on Chris Paton’s ‘Scottish Genealogy News and Events’ Blog.

Hi Sarah,
Hope you are well and having better weather in France!
Just looked at the post today - could you have a look for a James Christie or Christy - i have had no luck tracing him but his daughter Margaret Christie was married in Perth in 1837. Father James was a weaver.
Thanks,
Ailsa

Re: Perthshire, Scotland, Militia Survey, 1802
Hi Ailsa,
I have now left snowy southern France for spring-like Minnesota
There are 4 Christ* listed in the database:
Mr George Christee, writer in Perth, age 60 or older
David Christi, age 25, "Taylor" lodging with Mrs Rattray
Mr Alexr Christie, Stocking Manufacturer, age 60 or older
Mr Robt Christie, George Inn, Perth, age 60 or older
So doesn't look like your James was among them at the time.
All the best,
Sarah
