Post by Toke05 » Sat Mar 20, 2010 1:28 pm

:D Hi there. Hoping somebody out thre can fill me in on a few details and some info. I am trying to trace any family I may have somehwre over there. I am trying to find info on my Great Grandmother Hannah Hopton. She was born in Forfar, Scotland, later moving to Birmingham. Her parents were Flora and John Hopton . Flora was the daughter of James and Eliza Fox. They were employed at Hopetoun House in Scotland and for several yeas my Great Grandmother lived there while her parents worked as a gamekeeper and servant. Would be intereted to know more about Hopetoun House and if there is ayhwere I can find info on staff who worked there. Or of anybody else who may have had family that had worked there. Anybody who has info on the Hopton family at all, please get in touchHope somebody can help.
Many thanks.
Deb

Hi Deb
And welcome to Talking Scot :D
Can you give us any idea of dates for any of the events you've mentioned?

There seems to be a birth of a Hannah Hopton in Forfar, Angus (the county into which Forfar falls) in 1886 on Scotlands People - does this date sound about right? If so, you can buy credits there and see the original birth entry which may give you some additional information such as the date of marriage of the parents which will help you find it, and from there, their parent names. Also, the 1891 census would be worth looking at if the 1886 birth is your one.

Hi Lesley,
I see they are already in Birmingham by 1891, but in spite of the index on Ancestry, which mysteriously states that Hannah was born in 1870, she is clearly age 4 on the census-- so it looks like you have found the correct birth. :D
