Rachel Crosbie or Wallace

Post by apowell » Wed Apr 07, 2010 9:57 am

Hi,

I was amazed at the response to my previous post about the Dellicotts family that I thought I would ask for some advice about the other side of the family.

I know from the marriage entry that Joseph Dellicate married Rachel Crosbie 20th Oct 1793 Dumfries, Scotland and Rachel was born of this place however on their sons marriage certificate it states father Joseph but mothers name Rachel nee Wallace and no mention of Crosbie.

Anyone got any ideas on the parents of Rachel Wallace or Crosbie?

Regards
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I suppose it's possible that Rachel Wallace had previously been married to a Mr Crosbie and this is why she is named that way at the time of her marriage.

Admittedly, it isn't something I've seen before as Scottish women at that time didn't always keep a dead spouse's name. In fact, many of them didn't even take their husband's name. It has been mentioned on here before that there are plenty of examples of Scottish married women using their maiden names on censuses.

Hi Adrian

The clues to her likely parent names may lie in the name she gave her children if the family used the typical Scottish naming pattern.
Armed with those clues, you could then search IGI for a likely pair of parents. If successful with likely looking suspects, the difficult bit can be the next step - to prove it!

best wishes

Was it likely that Rachel's mother's maiden name was Wallace. I have a number of certificates where a child thought their grandmother's maiden name was their mother's maiden name. It can relate to a name often mentioned in a family being associated by children to the wrong relative.

Hi,

Many thanks for your replies and they've given me food for thought :D

The problem is that I have very little information to go on at the moment but the Wallace connection seems a real possibility because I can find no Baptisim entry for any Rachel Crosbie born within the dates. I have found a couple of possibiltes for Rachal Wallace that are worth looking into further.

I will look at the childrens names for any connection with the Wallace/Crosbie families.

I hope that Rachel was of Scottish ancestry because that would be great to have a Scottish connection and Rachel is looking like my last hope.

Regards
Adrian
