War Memorials in Falkirk District.....

Post by WilmaM » Wed Aug 17, 2005 4:30 pm

I have borrowed volume 6 of Calatria [ FLHS journal] from the library.

It has details of the various War memorials and Monuments around the Falkirk area .

It also details the list of names on many of these. If you have any names you'd like checked let me know.

It covers Airth, Avonbridge, Blackness, Bonnybridge, Bo'ness, Denny & Dunipace, Falkirk, Grangemouth, Larbert, Laurieston, Longcroft, Muiravonside, Polmont, Shieldhill, Slamannan, South Alloa and Standburn.

Hi Wilma

This sounds really interesting !
My family are all from Falkirk and Larbert . My main names are Hastings (or Haston )
My brickwall is for William Nicol who died sometime between 1840 & 1875 but I have no more details at all about him .
Other names I would be interested in are Howden , Honeyman , Roughead.

Any help you can give would be great
Thanks for the offer

Each memorial is arranged in a different way and gives varying information.
Larbert for instance, is divided into WWI & WWII, then into Regiments / services then rank . Other ones simply give an alphabetical list.
Some names are repeated, Shieldhill has it's own memorial in the main Street but the names are also to be found On the Polmont Old War Memorial.
Falkirk has names only on the Boer War Memorial in Newmarket Street, the other one just has :

"Over Eleven Hundred Bairns Died for their King and Country and in the Cause of Freedom, 1914 - 1919 They died that we might live.

On the sea, in earth's distant places, or at home, and in the air, nearly 220 men and women of Falkirk died for their country in the cause of righteousness - 1939-45 "

Larbert
WWI:
Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders - Cpl Alex Hastings L/cpl C H Nisbet
H. Light Infantry - Pte Thomas Tough

Grangemouth:
WWI:
William Nicol jnr
WWII:
William Nicoll

Denny & Dunipace
WWI:
Scottish Horse Field Ambulance - Pte John S Nisbet

Bo'nessWWI:
John Hastings
WWII:
William Hastings

For those not aware of the convention someone from the Falkirk area is known as a "Bairn", as in Paisley Buddies and the like.

I wondered if anyone would pick that up ;)

Not many Bairns being born now though - they've moved the Maternity unit to Stirling - until the new Joint hospital is built.

You mean it's like the Bow Bells?, - unless born in the sound of which you cannot be a Cockney ?!

Surely place of residence of the parents comes into play?

Wilma

Thank you for that info - Alex Hastings from Larbert I knew about but not Thomas Tough - so some further searching required ! I think that the William Nicols are too young for me to claim , and as yet I don't have a Bo'ness connection but the Hastings family in the Falkirk area all seem to be connected somehow , so I would be surprised if the Bo'ness lot weren't mine ! Nisbet from Dunipace also is promising - so thank you again for giving me more work to do - kids are back at school next week so I will have more time !
One more thing - do you know where the memorial is in Larbert ?

Morag

PS I am a true Bairn - both my parents and myself born in Falkirk - my Dad even still supports the football team !

Hi Morag,

I'm a wee bit late with this reply but I wondered if you'd looked in Larbert Old Parish Churchyard, the one right on Larbert Cross?

I know there's quite a few Howdens, Honeymans and Rougheads buried in there.
