Quintinespie, where or what is this

Post by sjbrundan » Sat Apr 10, 2010 6:17 pm

I'm researching the Livingston family of Grobdale and Darngarroch (hopefully i have spelt those correctly)
another name that has come up is 'Quintinespie' - is this a name of a village or possibly a farm, how could i find this out. i have done a search on the internet looking for a village by this name by nothing has come up. The date that this place is mentioned in our family tree is about 1670. so i don't really know where to look next.

You can find them all on this map within the boundary of Balmaghie.

Hello Sarah,

There are a few scattered references to Grobdale in the 19th Century British Library newspapers. There also appear to be some mentions in the Scotsman. Here are some summaries. Have you seen these articles?

Caledonian Mercury, (Edinburgh, Thursday, October 8, 1812
Charge of assault and battery against James Livingston of Grobdale, and Mary Mitchell, his spouse. These people were in a boundary dispute with a neighbour David Clark of Tormollan. They came to blows and Mary hit David on the head with a stone. To cut a long story short it was found that they had been provoked and they were let off with a warning.

Glasgow Herald, Monday, April 2, 1855
Mr William M’Gavin, tenant of the farm of Grobdale of Balmaghie, while traversing a moorland part of his farm, found the dead body of a man ………..

Glasgow Herald, Friday, August 15, 1873
On Grobdale, James Livingstone Esq., Bradford, bagged 8 brace of grouse on Tuesday …….

A few snippets from a google book search suggests Quintinespie is a farm that has possibly been split up in more recent years http://www.google.com.au/webhp?complete ... 15cf9557a8

Have you seen the images around Grobdale on Geograph. Try the quintinespie search there. http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=11892503

There’s no satellite imagery for this area but the Google camera car has been out and about, probably somewhere about here? (I'm a bit geographically challenged) http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&i ... 67,,0,9.24
