Still looking for George

Post by raybfarrow » Thu Apr 22, 2010 7:35 pm

Hi All,

Thankyou all for your replies to my post on George Thomson. It certainly gave me something to work on. I am convinced that the Margaret Scott living at Kingholm Quay, Dumfries aged 2 in 1851 and the George Thomson living with his grandfather at Lochmaddie, Crossmichael aged 9 in 1851 are the grandparents I am looking for but I still do not have any proof. I got excited when I found a Joseph and Mary Thomson in the 1841 census living in Kelton with children Isabella aged 5 and John aged 2 (thought perhaps George had not yet been born), but unfortunately there were no further leads. Sarah suggested looking at the Dumfries Kirk Session minutes to see if there was any mention of the illegitimate birth of Margaret Scott but I cannot find any Kirk Sessions for that time period. Also the suggestion of scrolling through the film of births in Crossmichael sounds a good one but how do I get hold of these films?

Thankyou in anticipation,

Lynne

Hi Lynn
but I cannot find any Kirk Sessions for that time period
Not sure where you have looked but do none of these churches cover the time period you are interested in? They may not all cover the period given completely- you would have to check each one individually in the NAS catalogue to find out what exists:

Church of Scotland
CH2/537 Records of Dumfries, St Michael's Kirk Session 1712-1880
CH2/979 Records of Dumfries New Church (Greyfriars) Kirk Session 1753-1963
CH2/1049 Records of Dumfries St Mary's Kirk Session (quoad sacra) 1838-1927 A

- and also in CH3, (Dissenting Churches, e.g. Free Kirk etc) :
CH3/83 Records of Dumfries, Buccleuch St. United Presbyterian Church Kirk Session 1810-1945
CH3/1601/1/1 Dumfries Relief/United Presbyterian Kirk Session: Minutes Mar 1790-Jun 1865
CH3/1601/1/2 Dumfries Free /United Presbyterian Church: Minutes of kirk session and managers' meetings Aug 1835-Aug 1858

You would need to go to NAS to view most of these (either digitised or one or two on microfilm), or alternatively it seems that all the originals are held locally in Dumfries & Galloway Archives.
Also the suggestion of scrolling through the film of births in Crossmichael sounds a good one but how do I get hold of these films?
If you can tell us where you are located; e.g. Scotland, rest of UK or Eire, USA, Australia etc. we can probably suggest the best way to access the films.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

So far I have only been searching online - a visit to NAS is not an option at the moment. I am living in Southampton, UK.

All the best,

Lynne

Hi Lynne
To view the OPR films if you are in Southampton I'd suggest contacting your local LDS centre - search here to find your nearest one:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp

If they do not currently hold the film you are interested in, they can order it for you (it will cost you £7.50) and when it arrives you can then go into the centre to view it.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

I think our nearest LDS centre is in Portsmouth so I will give that one a try.

Thankyou

Lynne
