Naismith Family, Glasgow
Hi I am looking for information re descendants of Peter Naismith born in Strathbungo, Renfrewshire in 1823. He was married to Elizabeth Allison born Erskine Renfrewshire and was a master painter in Norfolk Street, Glasgow. He and Elizabeth had 8 children, Agnes 1847, Thomas (also a painter) 1849, Jean 1851, Mary 1858, James Allison 1859, Elizabeth 1862, Daniel 1865 and Peter 1870. My great grandfather was their son, Thomas (1849) who married Agnes Jennings Anderson from Isle of Bute. If anyone out there is researching the same family it would be great to make contact
Many thanks
Karen

Hi Karen
...and welcome to Talking Scot.
The IGI has a few differences for children to this couple:
An extract there suggests Agnes was b. 20 NOV 1846 and christened 20 DEC 1846 Gorbals - but you have maybe seen something else which gives 1847 as her year of birth?
As well as Jean (1851), there is a Jane Mann Naismith born 15 APR 1855 Hutchesontown, Glasgow (extract) This would be well worth getting your hands on as 1855 entries give lots of additional info.
Mary appears to be b. 12 APR 1857 Hutchesontown
Elizabeth appears to be b. 01 AUG 1861 Tradeston, Glasgow
There appear to have been two Peters, one b. 01 SEP 1863 Tradeston, Glasgow, the other b. 26 JAN 1871 Tradeston, Glasgow, so perhaps the first one died young?
There is also another Elizabeth ch. 20 MAR 1853 Hutchesontown Relief Church, Glasgow (extract)
and Williamina b. 29 FEB 1868 Tradeston, Glasgow (extract)
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Karen and welcome!
Have you followed this family in the censuses to determine where the children eventually settled and who they married? The more names you post (e.g. spouses and children) the better chance of someone recognizing a name.
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Naismith Family, Glasgow
Hi Lesley & Sarah
Many thanks, yes that will be Agnes' correct date of birth, I was just going by the estimated birth year on a census. The Jane Mann Naismith will be one of mine as Jane/Jean Mann was the name of the mother of Peter Naismith. I wondered too if there had been a couple of deaths as there seemed to be a couple of gaps of a few years. I've been looking into the family since I posted and found there are, as you say two Peters, born close together, one the Uncle of the other. I have been on scotlandpeople also since posting to see if I can find any possible marriages for all the children which has returned some so will investigate those further also and hopefully get a few other names to post in the hope they ring a bell for someone who has connections to the Naismiths.
Thanks to the both of you for your help.
Cheers

Lesley, yes, the first Peter must have died. There was another Peter born in 1873 to the older brother of the previous two Peters and his parents were Thomas Naismith and Agnes Jennings Anderson my great grandparents. I thought about that after I posted! Sorry. I wish they varied the names a bit back then, it would make it sooooooo much easier! Thank you, Lesley for all your help.

Re: Naismith Family, Glasgow
Hello Karen,
Here’s one of your between census births and deaths in the Glasgow Herald, Wednesday, March 10, 1869.
DEATHS.
At 2 Warwick Street, on the 9th instant, aged one year and nine days, Williamina, daughter of Peter Naismith.
In the Glasgow Herald, Monday, January 19, 1863, there’s a notice of Dissolution of Copartnery. It’s identical to an Edinburgh Gazette notice http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/7293/pages/98 except for this extra paragraph:
With reference to the above Dissolution of Copartnery, the Subscriber, PETER NAISMITH, begs to intimate that he continues to carry on the Business, as formerly, in the same Premises, 23 Norfolk Street; and the Subscriber, WILLIAM KERR, also begs to intimate that he continues to carry on the Business in the Premises occupied by the late Firm, at 76 Paisley Road.
Hope that helps,
Alan

Re: Naismith Family, Glasgow
Alan, thank you so much for that, wish I had the know-how to find all this stuff! Great to find out a wee bit more about Peter's business and partner in it. As regards baby Williamina I didn't even know about her until yesterday. I only had the census' to go on and she died so young she didn't live long enough to appear on any.
Kind regards
Karen

Alan thank you so much for that. I have tried sending you a pm but don't think i'm being allowed to for some reason. It's maybe something to do with me only just registering.
Kind regards
