Place name in Morayshire (Bogharbry)
Having several ancestors born in a place called BOGHARBRY, Morayshire (OPR documents) I have
searched old maps but unable to pinpoint its location. They all come under the Rafford GROS
identification number.
Witnesses listed on the OPR documents come from places such as Burgy, Elgin, Blackhillocks, Darnhead
all of which I can find on maps.
Has anyone got any ideas as to where Bogharbry is ?
Thanks & Regards

Not sure if it has anything to do with Bogharbry but have you looked at:
http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/townmap4649.html
There is a 'Bogs' near Blervie Castle

Try a look at the ScotsOrigins website. There's a searchable database of all placenames used in the 1881 census of Scotland, and it's possible to search on any string of letters from the start, middle, or end of the problematic placename.

Hi MB & Roxy,
Thanks for the links, however neither showed any hits.
Bear in mind I am looking at births for 1759 - 1779 !!
This place may not be there anymore. The map I have looked at
is Shires of Murray by H Mol about 1732

Hi Stuart
Also try the NLS site maps:
# 1747-55 - William ROY - Military Survey of Scotland
# 1776 - George TAYLOR and Andrew SKINNER - Survey and map of the roads of... Scotland
http://www.nls.uk/maps/counties/index.html#elgin
Maybe worth a try - difficult to say without seeing the original handwriting on the records you have seen, but could it be what looks on the map like "Birdsguards"? (just south of Forres on ROY map)
Best wishes
Lesley

found it !
http://www.nls.uk/maps/counties/view/?id=266
On Ponts map north east of Forres on a river, north of Burgie.
I'll check for the modern place after my tea
The spelling there is Boigharbry.

I've had a look at the modern satellite pic and followed the burn from Burgie back to Findhorn Bay. I suspect that the river has changed path over the years; there are not many farms along the route of the burn. There is one just off the A96. I'll have a look on the way to/from work tomorrow to see what it is called - to see if it on the old map.

Hi Lesley, Roxy, & WilmaM,
Thanks for your efforts. Looks like the spelling in the OPR was phonetic (as usual)
and the "i" was omitted. Well spotted.
I have got 10 OPR birth documents for that time, and while some are difficult to read the "i" is
missing in all of them
I am suprised that it is as far from Rafford, but still in the Rafford catchment for
BMD's.
Thanks & Regads

Re: Place name in Morayshire (Bogharbry)
Hi Roxy,
I seem to have lost the PM I sent so will try and remember what I said.
I know its a year since I last posted on this subject, but a lot has happened
since then.
I was up in Elgin about two weeks ago and did a search for the place of Bogharbry.
I did not find any where that vaguely resembled that name, despite talking
to lots of people (Elgin Museum, Elgin Records office, people at the Glenburgie
Distillery etc).
My best guess now after my trip and looking at old maps is that it is somewhere
between Kilbuiack Castle, Newmill and Gateside. It might even have been a cottage
now long gone with the amalgamation of the farms in that area.
Just wondering if you managed to turn up anything ?
Best regards
Stuart
