Hi
I'm looking for information on the Empress Mills, which stood at the corner of Cotton Street (ex River Street) and Swanston Street, Dalmarnock, in the 19th century.
My gg-grandfather, Andrew Pinkerton, was manager there.
Thanks.

Hi Hibee,
There is an Empress Mills Ltd in Colne, Lancashire.
Maybe they used to have a mill in Glasgow as well. Could be worth a try.

Thanks, Mary and Annette.
Sadly these two mills are not connected to the one on Swanston Street.

Re: Glasgow cotton mill
Hello Hibee,
I couldn’t find much for the Empress Mills.
Glasgow Herald, Monday, October 28, 1895
DEAN OF GUILD COURT.—In our notice of the proceedings at last sitting of the Court there was inadvertently omitted the application of Messrs W & J. G. Smith & Co., manufacturers, Dalmarnock, for authority to erect additional building at their Empress Mills, Swanston Street, which was granted.
There’s a notice in the Edinburgh Gazette, September 23, 1919, pages 3123-3124, regarding the winding-up of W & J. G. Smith & Co, and disposal of its assets. http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issu ... pages/3123
The Glasgow Herald has birth notices for several children of Mrs. Andrew Pinkerton, of Duke Street. On March 30, 1899, there’s a report of a will of the late William Gibson, Cork Manufacturer, Glasgow, who resided in Dumbartonshire. His wife was Catherine Stobo or Gibson. Two beneficiaries were Andrew and William Pinkerton, nephews. Some of the many other names mentioned were Orr, Goodall and Spiers. Any connection?

Thanks, Alan.
The last vestige of the mill is about to disappear under a Commonwealth Games Village.
