Wonder Street, Musselburgh

Post by Hibee » Sun Jun 13, 2010 12:10 pm

Hi

Has Wonder Street, which features in the 1871 Census, disappeared, or merely been renamed?

Thanks

Hi Hibee,

If on ScotlandsPeople you look at the first header page for the 1871 census for the enumeration book, it names the streets included in that book. That narrows it down to a small area to be found on http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/musselburgh_2.html - sheets IV.11.4 and IV.11.9. Wonder Street must have been part of, or very close to Newbigging. Newbigging is still there (round the corner from Luca's ice cream shop), but i think most of its buildings there now are much newer than the 1871 census.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Hibee,

Here’s a tasty snippet about Wonder Street from Parliamentary Papers, 1874, being part of a report of the Rivers Pollution Commission. http://www.google.com.au/webhp?complete ... 7d7dc8b535

Newbiggen well in Wonder street is 10½ feet deep, and furnishes water which is similar in all respects to that of the two wells already described. Though bright and sparkling, it was found to contain a considerable amount of unoxidised sewerage matter. It is difficult to imagine a more disgusting state of things than that which here prevails in reference to what is called potable water, and it is satisfactory to know that the people of Musselburgh have the prospect of soon being relieved from the necessity of drinking their own drainage, as the Corporation are contemplating the construction of waterworks for the supply of the town.

Somebody on this page has a relative at 20 Wonder Street, Inveresk, Musselburgh, in 1901, so I guess it was still around then. http://bobhewitt.co.uk/Genealogy/BobHew ... ors/a1.htm

Is this any help?

"The picturesque name of Wonder Street was given to the first part of the present Newbigging, running south from Musselburgh High Street towards Inveresk ..."

Thank you all.

I fear No 3 Wonder Street has long since made way for the Top To Toe Beauty Salon.
