Saving records from Ancestry

Post by annie1 » Thu Jun 17, 2010 9:04 am

Hi all,

I used Ancestry yesterday, I have not been on it for a while and noticed things have changed a bit, I found a couple of records and went to save them, the save process was different, but I thought it seemed quite easy, save to computer, shoebox, or start a tree.
I saved to my computer, in a place that was easy for me to find, but when I went to look for it, there was no file. I ticked Ancestry as a trusted site, as I thought that was the problem and tried again, but nothing, I have searched everywhere, and I cant find them, they were not in even in my temp files,I could not even print the record off while on the site. It kept saying an error has occured, I have 10 days left to get access to these.
I have vista, and dont know if this is the problem, I used to manage to save easily last year, is it me, or is the problem common?

Hi Ann

I don't have a problem saving - I just checked - I am still using XP. I use firefox as a browser - ancestry doesn't much like IE 6 any more so if you haven't updated to IE8 you may need to do that or try using firefox.

What they have changed recently is that every image saved to your disk also gets saved to ancestry "shoe box". I find that utterly pointless and it would seem to waste alot of their space. If you are no longer a paying member, I think you lose access to the shoebox, so I have never saved anything there. Caused me concern when I found lots of images there - I had thought I was saving them incorrectly - but it just seems to duplicate every save.

Hi Trish,

Problem solved! at last. It looks like it was because I had upgraded to IE8, my settings had to be changed, I managed to download and print, I still dont know where the first download went to, but I think vista has some wierd virtual files somewhere, I am not even going to try find them :?

I also noticed the record was in my shoebox, strange, but as I only use pay as you go on Ancestry, I always save my computer, I made the mistake once of thinking I would be able to see them in my shoebox when my credits ran out!

Thanks
Ann

Pleased that it was sorted - changing browsers usually upsets something along the way. The defaults seem to get set to stop one doing anything :(

I use ancestry alot and have had a subsccription for a number of years - but I still never save to the shoebox (other than the now automatic save).
