WILLIAM BRUCE - 1915 Brickwall

Post by darylrodger » Fri Jun 18, 2010 10:50 pm

Hi,

I was hoping that someone out there maybe able to help me knock down my brickwall regarding my great grandfather William Bruce.

He was a foreman mason, and was born in Brechin on 26th May 1871, to David Bruce & Mary Shirret.

He was married to Abigail Jane Tedford, and their daughter Bessie was my grandmother.

I know he was in Glasgow in 1915, where he seems to have bought items for a possible trip somewhere. He lived in 3 Ralston Terr, Anniesland with his wife and children. According to his daughter Bessie's marriage certificate on 9th Feb 1918, it states him as being deceased.

I can't seem to find any trace of what happened to him :? Does anyone have any ideas on where to look next ?

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

By 1915 he would have been about 44 years old, still eligible to join one of the services in WW1.

Have you looked into that possibility?

Hi,

Yes, I did think about the possibility of William joining up, but I thought that men with a profession were excluded from serving ? He was a master stonemason, so I though that he might be working outwith the services, although I could be wrong !

Where's the best place to look for ww1 records ?

Thanks,

Daryl

You can check the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at http://www.cwgc.org/
and the Scottish National War Memorial at http://www.snwm.org/

If he was a casualty he should show up on 1 or both of these, sometimes family information is given aswell as the soldier's own details the SNWM has place of birth which could help narrow it down.

If he was a Stone Mason, the Engineers might have wanted him for his skills.
