Problems getting started ( again )

Post by Shortfuse » Tue Jul 06, 2010 5:25 pm

Hello All
Once again after a lengthy lay-off I'm trying to carry on with the family trees and I've come up against a problem before I have even started.Having lost my hard drive in the past I bought a external one to do my back up on.I thought I had backed it up OK so after reformatting the computer I downloaded the latest version of LEGACY and tried to load the backed up version .I don't know what I've done but I've now got a folder from the back up on the desk top which has the original family tree programmes on ,so far so good , now when I click on the LEGACY icon the programme comes up OK and lets me choose which family i want choose . Again so far so good the problem is if I put the folder from the back up into the waste bin and then click on the LEGACY icon and the programme comes up "empty" with no family files on it.Sooooooooooo if anybody could suggest a way to get my programmes into LEGACY ( I've played about with importing , drag and drop , swearing etc etc . Any thoughts would be most welcome
best regards sf
ps Hope you understand my ramblings not too sure I do

Hi Shortfuse
Can you open the family files from the desktop folder and view all the data in Legacy? The Legacy software is quite separate from the files it creates. If you have backed up your files from a previous session, then you should be able to open them. If however, you move the files to the bin, then the Legacy program does not have a clue where the files it was expecting to see on the desktop have gone ....and will tell you there is nothing to open there, but will offer you a dialog box so that you can go find them...but I don't think the bin is even a choice, as no one actually stores files they wish to keep in the bin.

If you want to store the files elsewhere (not in the bin, obviously!!) you can move the folder, and next time you ask Legacy to open a file you will need to tell it (the first time only) where the files now live by navigating to them in the Legacy "open family file" dialog box. Next time, that is the first place it will look.
Sooooooooooo if anybody could suggest a way to get my programmes into LEGACY
Legacy is the PROGRAM or the SOFTWARE...the things you are needing to open using the Legacy program are your family tree FILES. The Legacy program can create many different family tree FILES e.g. I have about 30 or so family files; my own tree, small and larger trees which other folk have sent me which may link in somewhere at some point, and other wee trees which I created based on bits and pieces, which again, may fit into the larger picture one of these days!

Best wishes
Lesley
