Mac help

Post by Tracey » Mon Jul 12, 2010 5:57 pm

I have now changed to Macbook Pro and it feels like i have my left arm tied behind my back. Had my first lesson today and its not quite as scarey, not much different to a pc just all the familiar bits are in different places :? !.

This could be the first of many q's from me........ :)

I cant sign into Hotmail from my link tab because my cookies are not enabled (although i could if i found hotmail via Google :? ). I have found how you change the cookies but do all you mac users have it on accept all cookies ?. Mine at the moment is on *only sites i visit*. On my pc i am sure i had it to accept all but just want to make sure before i go ahead and change it.

Thanks...........

Hi Tracey,
Sounds like how I feel on a PC-- I can't find ANYTHING!!!

I assume you're using Safari? Or are you on another web browser?
My Safari settings are set to Accept cookies: Only from sites I visit

It seems to work fine... And surely, if you "visit" Hotmail, then the computer would learn it right away and thenceforth accept those cookies?

[cheers]

Hi Sarah
Sorry its taken so long to reply but the problem was with the laptop. Now, i did a lot of talking to pc people before deciding to buy a Mac. I went to a lot of stores and asked their advice on what i needed and after they told me i said now why would i buy a pc and not a Mac and everyone no matter where i went almost swooned when Mac was mentioned ! so long story short i bought a Mac from the Apple Store. Got Mac home and i was waiting for the bells and whistles but they didnt arrive.Pages were slow, Iwork wouldnt accept my password, the pointer freezes, etc then finally last night i switched it on and an hour and a half later it was still on the page with the apple and the bit that swirls round and it wouldnt let me switch it off. The fan was going mad and it was hot ! So all sorts was going through my head about having wasted all that money..............Anyways i took it back this morning and it apparently had a defective hard drive they changed it without question, and gave me the extra two years warranty free !
The most impressive thing about mac is the service. In the short time i had this the backup is impeccable and the long term support is second to none so hopefully i wont be posting as may Aaaaahhhhhssss :x as i thought !

\:D/ =D> Glad to hear it Tracey! It's true that you can't beat the service. If you ever have a problem, just pop into an Apple store anywhere in the world and they'll help you out at the "Genius bar." We went in to the one in Glasgow while traveling and they helped us through an internet problem that was not a Mac problem, but a problem with our internet provider in France. All this for free. :D

I've been a committed PC person since the Commodore 64! However my son, who learned his initial computer skills on a PC, is now a Mac man all the way, mainly because he is a graphic designer.

For years he has been trying to persuade me to convert without success. He recently turned the tables on me though! As a child he was always told "you can't say you don't like something till you've tried it"!

I had played around with his Mac a couple of times, but not for long enough (he says!). He buys 2nd hand Macs and refurbishes them for resale, very successfully, I might add, so I've asked him to lend me one that is ready to go.

I'm 62 years old and feel like I'm going on my first date

I thought i was going to blow a gasket today as the *pointer* froze for 40 mins so i got on the phone to see if it was ok just to switch it off by the button and i havnt had this new replcement one full day yet !. Googleing faults on these Macbook Pro,s there do seem to be a few and i have experienced most of them with this past nine days !
I am finding that a lot is very similar to a pc and quite possibly easier found when you know where to look. Not much is buried in a file in a file in a file in the bowels of the machine ect...
One thing i cant get used to is deleting *backwards*

Go on that date Mary, you never know ! but mine ended up for poorer

Hello Tracey,

I would Getamac but you can’t pull them to bits the way you can a desktop PC that’s in a great big box. Linux is a very nice alternative for the adventurous impoverished.

It’s probably time to count to ten, make a nice cup of tea, and settle down to watch some Getamac commercials. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avFdcKUnbEs

If things get really bad there’s always Edmug, although reading their blurb they sound a bit like A.A. (and I didn’t mean the Automobile Association) http://www.edmug.org.uk/

I walked into the Mac section of a Department Store once and it was like walking into a church, deathly quiet and nobody there.

Barring hardware failures, you shouldn’t normally have many problems once you and Mac have properly settled down together. Unlike PC's and Windows, Mac and the operating system are made for each other, and should be a perfect match, or so they say.

And remember, *he’s Scottish.

Getanothermac,
Alan

I have to admit, any time I went to the Mac store with my son, they were always really keen to help, and not a sign of the "I have superior knowledge" syndrome I've experienced from techies in PC stores.

I shall have another wee go at using one, but have promised the son to give it more time.

I know he certainly has less problems with his Macs than I have with PC's.

I first saw those youtube videos being played upstairs in the Apple Store in Regent Street (Central London) where they have what is best described as a small cinema. And at anytime of the day this store is like a London tube station at rush hour. Me and this Mac are going to have to settle down but i am not feeling the love just yet !

Well, for all you maybe Mac's ..................
I have to admit it is a lot easier to fathom out than a pc even without lessons. If anyone was about to purchase thier first computer i would say, if you can, get one of these.
i was waiting for the bells and whistles but they didnt arrive.Pages were slow, Iwork wouldnt accept my password, the pointer freezes, etc then finally last night i switched it on and an hour and a half later it was still on the page with the apple and the bit that swirls round and it wouldnt let me switch it off. The fan was going mad and it was hot !
As this turns out............something very similar happened to this replacement. When i took it back to Mac the guy was looking at all the data and asked me if i had insatalled a Dongle. On both days i had installed a T-Mobile Dongle and although it said compatible with Mac, they arnt completely, and it apparently says something to this effect on the T-Mobile web site somewhere. They, dongles, apparently can move certain files around which basically is what happend here and probably caused the first melt down on the first laptop so i was extremely lucky they replaced the first one. Anyway all was sorted and dongle is usable but im giving it a miss !

I have bought Macfamily Tree and finding it strange ( too scared to install anything that isnt Mac now !) but i am sure i will get used to that also.

Having discovered Photo Booth i now understand why there are so many children hanging about the Apple store - great fun !

Oh, and i have now bought an iphone too !
