Mary KcKenna - Glasgow

Post by jen2 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 3:15 am

Trying to find the birth of my great grandmother Mary McKenna born about 1855 in Glasgow. Her parents are Alexander McKenna and Mary Anne Copeland. I have a 1851 Scotland Census for a Mary McKenna husband Alexander but this was 4 years before Mary's birth so I do not know if this is the right family. Have not been able to find them in a 1861 Census.
The Census states Mary was born Prestle Folk Monkton, Ayrshire.

I know great grandmother Mary immigrated to Australia. The earliest record I have of her is a Marriage to a John Turner in Australia in 1876. I have not been able to find immigration records for her. I have been in contact with CSG Archives but they been unable to help.

I would appreciate any help as I have been trying to find her for 12 months.

Hi Jen2
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D

A few questions; are the parent names you have for Mary what she herself stated at the time of marriage? Or are they from a death?
Do you have a marriage for the parents Alexander & Mary? Any chance they may have been members of a church other than Church of Scotland? Any chance they may not have been married? Do you know of any other siblings for your Mary; if so, when and where they were born?

In the 1851 census you have found, what ages are Mary & Alexander, where are they, what is Alexanders occupation and where do they both state they were born?

I'm probably being thick here (only on first cup of tea of the day..) but where is CSG Archives based?

I see you have been working on this one for a while, with a little more info given here:
http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums ... enna-Birth - where Jean has said that the couple you have in 1851 are Roman Catholic. Does this fit with what you know about Mary later e.g. at time of marriage? Certainly seems a possibility given the surname. Is Ireland a possibility for origin? Again, the surname suggests this cannot be discounted.

If you have any further information you can fill us in with, it all helps us to help you and saves our members following trails you may already have explored in depth and found to be dead ends.

Here, if these are the same folk, it is suggested that they may be from England - have you ruled this out as a possibilty?

Best wishes
Lesley

p.s. I'm no expert on Ayrshire, being an east coast lass, but the name of "Prestle Folk" just sounds a bit odd...I'm sure someone local to the area will be able to confirm or help us out with that one.

Here's the couple in 1851 at Polmadie -

Alexander Mckenna 23 born Ireland
Mary Mckenna 22 born Prestie Folk, Monkton
Felix Mckenna 3
Peter Mckenna 10 Mo
Edward Mckenna 22
Margaret Mckenna 22
Eleanor Mckenna 2
Peter Mccarl 59
Sarah Mccarl 17
Josh Donoughie 27

I would think Prestie Folk should be Prestwick. Jean says Mary's name is Carne or Carle http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums ... enna-Birth so it looks like her father is living with them.

Felix shows up in USA 1880 census at Colorado.

Annette

Hi there

Further to Annette's post, there are a number of family trees on Ancestry which claim descent from the Polmadie family . If they are correct the family emigrated to the USA and the mother's maiden name was McCardle :
This is them indexed as McCanne in the 1860 US census at Allegheny, Pennsylvania
Name Age
Alex Mccanne 33 Coal Miner Ireland
Mary Mccanne 30 scotland
Philix Mccanne 12 scotland
Peter Mccanne 10 scotland
Margt Mccanne 4 Penna
Ann Mccanne 2 Penna
Alex Mccanne 11/12 Penna

They did have a Mary but not till 1868 and she died in the US according to those trees ...
Sorry... ](*,)

Lesley,

Sorry for the delay in replying .
In regards to her parents name that is what is shown on her Marriage Certificate and on her Death Certificate it shows father as Alexand McKenna - occupation Engineer but no mothers name listed. Sorry I do not have a marriage for Alexander & Mary .
I have copies of 2 of Marys childrens births and they both state mothers name as Mary McKenna born Glasgow Scotland.

On Mary's and John Turners Marriage Certificate it states they were married in the Trinity Church (Anglican)

In regards to the CSG Archives they are at Archives@glasgowlife.org.uk. They were very helpful even though they were unable to shed any light on Mary.

I will look at the Ireland and England and see if I can find anything on Alexander or Mary Anne

Have found an 1891 England Census for Alexander McKenna, age 60 born Liverpool, Lancashire, England married to Mary A McKenna aged 51. Mary was born Hanworth, Norfolk England but still do not know if these are the McKenna's I am after.

Sorry but that is all I have.

In regards to the CSG Archives they are at Archives@glasgowlife.org.uk.
Ah ha...I still was not understanding it at all, never having heard of the CSG archives, but I see now it is actually the Mitchell Library, coming under "Culture and Sport Glasgow (CSG) " #-o

Lesley,

Mary's children are
Emma b1878, George b1879, Harriet Amelia Maud b1880, Mary Sarah b1881. All were born in Queensland Australia. All have the surname Bourne.
