McIntyre / McInnes 1800s

Post by patjohn » Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:19 pm

The McIntyre story goes around in circles as there are a number of anomalies in the records of the family. On the record of his first marriage in 1862 John McIntyre gives his parents as Hugh McIntyre and Euphemia McIntyre, maiden surname McInnes but on the record of his second marriage in 1878 he gives his parents as Hugh McIntyre and Sarah McIntyre, maiden surname Cameron,

I have not been able to find a record of any marriage between Hugh McIntyre and Sarah Cameron. However I have found the illegitimate birth , or in the delicate phraseology of the 1830 records “bastard son” of John born to Sarah Cameron where the date and place fit. As he apparently went to live with Hugh and Effy is there a suggestion that Hugh was the father? There is a record of marriage between Hugh McIntyre and Euphemia McInnes in 1827
The 1841 census gives Hugh as aged 40 and John aged 11. Effy McInnes does not have the name McIntyre. In other entries in the census for this area it is usual for the term “Do” to be used to indicate the same name for family members. Does this indicate they might not have been married?

The 1851 census gives Hugh as aged 54 , and John aged 21 and still a scholar?? - highly unlikely
It also lists Mary as aged 14 and a scholar but I can find no record of these births.
Has anyone got any suggestions??

Hi Pat,

Finding a woman listed by her maiden name on the 1841 census was not at all unusual. I don't know what the rules were, but I have several who are on the 1841 census this way and were very much married. As to the children, you might not find them recorded anywhere before the census was taken in 1841 especially if the parents belonged to one of the break away churches. You might also find them being baptized at a much later date as part of a group of family members. I have found children being baptized at age 8 or 10 along with siblings. Don't know what the reason, but it happened.
