I am hoping somebody can do me a great favour. I have just been visiting the GRO in Edinburgh. I have - not for the first time - left behind a small sheet of paper with some information on it. I need the date of death of an Alexander Allan a blacksmith from possibly the Rothes area of Moray. Alexander was married to Jane Mill or Jean Milne (the different appears in two seperate documents, one might just be a transcription error on a marriage certificate). One of Alexander's children was John Allan born in the Rothes area in 1837. The death occured in/before 1861 as Alexander is marked as being deceased on John's marriage certificate for that year.I know it's not a lot of information to work with but it is all I can remember off the top of my head. Hope somebody can help.

Doddie

Hi Doddie
Do you have him in any census? 1841? 1851? Have you checked Freecen? http://www.freecen.org.uk
There is one aged 50 (remember ages were rounded down, so could be 50-54yrs in age) in 1841, Rothes, a Blacksmith, on Freecen, with a Jean, and a son John (and 3 other kids). If you have this, was he still around in 1851, or was Jean a widow? If you can narrow the window down a little, it might help you find him.
Have you tried a search on the Scotlands People site in the OPR deaths? You can access the same records there as you can when at GROS.
Morayshire MIs worth a try?? http://www.mbgrg.org/
Best wishes

Hi Lesley, Jen & Maggie, I hang my head in shame that I have taken so long to thank you for your prompt replies to my query. I'm very glad you managed to find Alexander Allan's death details for me. The link to the Moray site is fascinating a lot of interesting information on it. I hope I can help you with your queries if I ever get the chance.
