Clydebank High School

Post by Sam Cooper » Fri Sep 10, 2010 7:46 pm

Recently I came across the Old Clydebank High School site. (oldchs.co.uk) As a formed pupil of the school I found it extremely interesting - particularly the old photographs. I have a few old photographs that I could add to their collection. Unfortunately the site has not been updated recently and the "contact us" link seems to be no longer operative. Has anyone any information about the site and/or its possible demise?

Regards to all

The contact link seems to be working for me (http://oldchs.co.uk/contact.php) so maybe they've sorted the problem. If you still can't see it put web@ in from of the domain name.

Sam I'm an old pupil too although too vain to say how old!
My Grandfather was a pupil along with his brothers when it was at it's original building in Miller St I think. My Aunt Uncles & younger siblings were all pupils too.
My youngest brother lives very close to the new improved version.I think the quads are gone.
When the Rector died when I was in First Year we all cheered as we all got the day off-such is the callousness of youth.JTR Robertson was next in post.
Miss McLaren was the Assistant Head.
I hated school :( but do have fond memories :D of some of my teachers who were brilliant including the late Mr McKay who taught us Economics. He was a brilliant teacher who made lessons interesting. My English teachers were an inspiring lot too.

Joette
Thanks for your comments. Your recollections of CHS should be posted on the website. Am I correct in assuming that the rector whose death gave you the day off was Mr Manning? If so, I was there while his predecessor, Dr Davidson, was in post - and that makes me much older than you!

Sam

Hi Sam,

A neighbour of mine is in a couple of the 1950s photos there. He is aged about 70 now. I don't know if that is the age group you are from or not. (hoping not to have insulted you)

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Nelmit

I came though both primary school (Radnor Park) and CHS with Aistair Tough. I lost contact with him in the mid 1960s, but I did bump into his younger brother, Ian, while in Tesco's store in Cleethorpes a few years ago - Ian being one half of The Krankies. Small world!

I have sent some names of members of football teams but they have not yet been picked up.

I hope the site survives and prospers. It was sad that the Clydebank Story site disappeared.

Regard
Sam Cooper

Yep Sam it was Mr. Manning who gave us the extra day off & saved me from the dreaded "late book" I was plowing my way up Shelley Drive late as usual-I am not a morning person! I could see & hear pupils streaming out the gates. With cheerful acclaim
"The Rector died & we've all got the day off".
I was reluctant to believe until it had been confirmed by somebody I know.
I know of many juicy scandals there but my lips are sealed. There were many colourful characters in my day!.

Sam as a PS where did you Coopers originate?Do you have connections to the Coopers of originally Perth & then Lanark.
My Grandfather was James Cooper Waddell-named for his Father's half-brother who was killed at work on the Railway Bridge at Cambuslang. He was a stonemason who left five children. They did well from themselves .
James Cooper's parents were James Cooper/Ann Graham although James was named as James Waddell in the 1861 Census when he was living with his stepfather Alexander Waddell & his siblings in Dollar,Clackmannashire after the death of his mother. He was 16 then.
I spent many hours & lots of credits looking for a marriage of a Waddell(female) to a Cooper(male) as my Mum was positive that her Father was named for her Grandfather's sister's husband! It all fell into place with the 1851 Census & James Cooper was in Auchterarder with Ann his mother,Jane Graham(her niece but named as her daughter) & Thomas Waddell.
They were obviously close & in touch as James signs two of his three half- siblings death certificates.Sad tale all orphaned young & then three died in their early twenties.

Hi Joette

Sorry - there's no connection here. My Coopers came over from Ireland in the 1830's (which is why I cannot get back any further with them), moved from Carlton to Milngavie in the 1850s or 1860s, and from there to Clydebank in the 1890s.

Happy hunting

Sam Cooper
