WW2 Scots Guardsman

Post by helenm263 » Tue Sep 21, 2010 12:29 am

Hoping someone can help, I have a name and a photograph and that is it. ](*,) The person I am looking for is William McEwen he was serving in London in 1942. I have tried SGA archives in London but as I have no death date or service number I cannot do a search through them. :( Has anyone got any ideas? I have put the photo into all the newspapers I can find online, Dennistoun online has run the story for me. I have approached others but they do not respond. I will place the link for the picture here.
I think I have tried every forum that I can find...any others in scotland that I can try?
suggestions are all most welcome. here is the link to his photo in case anyone might know him.

Hello Helen,

Your link to the picture isn’t working for me, I’m not sure why. [link above repaired - AndrewP]

See if this one works
http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz21 ... McEwan.jpg

If that picture is unedited then the trophies, and what looks like a couple of medals, are probably an important part of the reason the picture was taken. He must have been pretty good at something.

Is there anything on the photo to suggest who took it? It looks like it’s mounted on heavy cardboard, possibly a studio shot. He is a sergeant wearing what looks like battledress. How do you know his name, and that he is Scots Guards, is that information on the photograph?

Without breaking the rules, is there anything else you can tell us about him, when and where he was born, his life pre WW2, when he was last known to be alive, etc. Is the known spelling of his name McEwan or McEwen?

All the best,
Alan

Hey Alan & Leslie, I thought that the medals and such were of importance, the picture we have is just a standard photgraph, we know his name because he was dating my grandmother. She was with him when he was deployed during the war. All the information is verbal from my grandmother who has now passed. So this is all we have. No birhdate etc. I am actually running blind with this and honestly feel that the way to finding him is through his picture.

@ Leslie, I have been looking for WW2 forums, but have been unable to find one... can you suggest any that might be relevent?
Helen

Hi Helen
A quick google turns up a few:
http://ww2f.com/
have a section
"Military Service Record & Genealogical Research
Looking for information on a family member that served in the military?"
- not used the forum, so don't know how speedy or effective replies are, but the forum seems quite active.

There are also:
http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/
http://ww2chat.com/forum.php
http://www.cfww2.com/
- and probably quite a few more!

Best wishes
Lesley

Is it possible the trophies were for rifle shooting? Did the army give out cups?

That particular web site seems to be causing problems just now, with a movie window popping up and slowing down access....possibly virus related - maybe one to avoid for the moment till the issue is fixed....

I never thought of shooting trophies, will have to get the original photo from my mother and try to enlarge it and then check out the trophies. Must have been a good shooter haha. thank you to everyone for your replies every thought and response gets my head ticking and looking in places I would never have thought of.
Lesley that link you put up for me, my virus protection red flags me can't get anywhere near it. I have however joined a ww2 forum in Forces Reunited, luckily they let me join even though I was not a member of the armed forces, at a cost though. But all the money and time will be worth it, I have met new people and hopefully can track family history and find distant cousins. it's a big world out there, sometimes I forget just how big.Just can't thank you all enough and I hope I can repay the kindness at some stage.
