Brown/Inglis Family

Post by LizzieS » Thu Oct 07, 2010 3:30 pm

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help? I am searching for information regarding Alexander Brown who was born about 1763 in Easterhouse, Shotts and his wife Katherine Inglis also born in Easterhouse about 1767. The proclamation of their marriage is dated 8th Dec 1794. I can find no record of their actual births or deaths on SP.

They appear to have had only one child - Marion Brown b 29th April 1795. On the OPR of her birth her father is a Mason in the Easterhouses of Murdaistown - would that be present day Murdostoun?. When she marries, a John Finlayson, she is stated as being from the parish of Cambusnethan.

It would seem possible that John & Katherine may be buried in Kirk O'Shotts graveyard. Does anyone know if the MI's have been transcribed or alternatively how I might find out if they are buried here?

Thanks
Lizzie

I know it's a very common name, and maybe you have this, but I wonder if this is Alexander and Catherine in 1841 from FREECEN -

Piece: SCT1841/628 Place: Cambusnethan -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 8
Civil Parish: Cambusnethan Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Middle Ward
Folio: 0 Page: 4
Address: Bonkle

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
BROWN Alexr M 70 Mason Lanarkshire
BROWN Catherine F 70 Lanarkshire
BROWN Helen F 40 Lanarkshire
CASSELS Catherine F 15 Lanarkshire

If so it looks like Marion may have had a couple of sisters -

1851 same address -

Helen Brown 53 Head
William Waddel 35
Carthrane Waddel 45 Sister
James Waddel 13
Alexander Waddel 9

Annette

Hello Lizzie,

From the FamilySearch Wiki regarding Births/Baptisms recorded in the OPR’s of the Parish of Shotts. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Shotts ... ,_Scotland

“Births: There are no entries 1708–1712, 1714–1716 and 1738–March 1753. There are no entries, except for a few irregular entries, January 1755–May 1786. Entries out of the order of time are frequent 1786–1799. Mothers’ names are not recorded, except in irregular entries until 1786.”

That’s probably why you can’t find the births. For deaths there appear to be only the mortcloth records. Also only mortcloth for Cambusnethan https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Cambus ... ,_Scotland

“The vast Murdostoun Estate contained many farms – the main ones being: Foulburn, Castlehill, Easterhouse, Westerhouse, Penty, Muirmailing, Easterhill, Westerhill and Shapenknowe.” http://www.salsburghheritagegroup.co.uk/21.html

Hi All,

Thanks for your responses.

Lesley - Thanks for the information re the Cd's, however as I am not certain that they are buried in the Kirk O'Shotts I'm loath to fork out £15! See below.

Annette - Yes I think you are right and these are Marions sisters though neither seem to be registered. I tracked the family through the census to 1881 and Helen Brown was still there then! Decided to spend some money on SP and found her death age 85 in 1883 and guess what her parents are given as Alexander Brown and Catherine Inglis =D>
I had assumed that as I could only find one child, Marion, born to them, that the mother had probably died. Just shows one should never make assumptions, though I think it is very likely that both Alexr and Catherine must have died between 1841 and 1851 and I still can't find a record of their deaths.

If they did die in Bonkle is it still likely they would have been buried in Kirk O'Shotts?

Alan - thanks for the tips. The Salsburgh Heritage sight has some great photos.

Once again thank you all.

Lizzie
