King Family Aberdeenshire

Post by Nikkik » Thu Oct 14, 2010 12:55 pm

Hi, can anyone help? I am looking for the parents of Robert King who was born in Greyfriars, Aberdeenshire in 1796.

Robert was married to Mary, but I have no maiden name for her.

They had eight children:

John
Janet
Alexander
Jean
Margaret
Robert
Archibald
Elizabeth

Any help greatly appreciated. :D

Hi Nikkik
and welcome to Talking Scot :D

This appears to be the family in 1841, at Freecen ( http://www.freecen.org.uk ) living at Nelson Lane, (Village or Island: John Knox) Aberdeen

KING Robert 45 Iron Founder
KING Mary 39
KING John 16 Iron Founder
KING Janet 14
KING Alexr 12
KING Jean 8
KING Margt 6
KING Robert 4
KING Archibald 2
KING Elizabeth 2m

All listed as born Aberdeenshire - not seeing any obvious sign on IGI or on a quick search of SP of the list of kids.

There is this marriage on IGI but it is a submission - could this be them?
Marriages: Robert King
Spouse: MARY CHRISTIE
Marriage: 13 DEC 1817 Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland

- this couple appear to have a daughter Janet as follows, an extract on the IGI:
Christening: 27 FEB 1827 Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland
Parents:
Father: ROBERT KING
Mother: MARY CHRISTIE
- this would about fit with the Janet in the 1841.

Any of the children married in Scotland after 1855?
Do you know when Robert died? Or his wife Mary? Are they maybe members of a church other than the Church of Scotland?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley, thanks for your help. I think that could be the marriage. I think Robert died in 1846 in Aberdeen.

Thanks again Nikki. :)

Hi Nikki

If I've got the correct bunch in 1851 again from the excellent freecen site, looks like Mary is a widow, so that would fit with what you thought re. Robert.

Aberdeen, 1 Albion Street

KING Mary Head W 52 Provision Dealer
HALL Mary Dau M 28 Seaman's Wife
KING Janet Dau 27 Mill Worker
HALL Alexander Grnson 6 Scholar
HALL John Grnson 1

Do you know what happens to the rest of the family - do they stay in Scotland or leave for elsewhere?
There is a Mary King/Christie listed on SP as dying in 1886 in Aberdeenshire - you'll not know if this is the one you are looking for though without actually seeing the entry. You'd really need to confirm it one way or another if the Christie/King couple are definately your ones - the death of Mary or the marriage entry of a child in Scotland should provide the required proof.

From the 1851, it looks like there was also a daughter Mary, who married a Mr. Hall, a seaman. Maybe at around 18 she had already left home by the time of the 1841?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley, I have found the marriage of Robert their son to Barbara Dickson, on the 13 March 1857, at Old Machar, Aberdeen. He was my 2nd great grandfather. :)

Good - so if you look at the full marriage entry from ScotalndsPeople, the names of the parents of the bride & groom should be given, and then you should be able to establish if Mary Christie is indeed YOUR Robert's mother (and Robert Senior's wife).

Best wishes

Hi all,

There are 8 family trees on Ancestry.com for this Robert King. Two have him married to Mary Christie, two have him married to Mary Stewart, three have him married to Mary Unknown and one has him married to or at least having a child, Alexander, with Margaret Gray, then married to Mary Christie.

If you don't subscribe to Ancestry, you might want to check at your library which may have it available for patrons.

Carol :D
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Hi Speleobat2,

Thanks for your help. I was on Ancestry.co.uk, but my subcription ran out, and now I can't view anything. I will have to renew it.
Nikki.
