My great great great grandfather John MacKillop(e) was born 8th October, 1802 in Glener..........more - Kilmore & Kilbride - try as I may, I cannot read the place name. His father was Alexander MacKillop(e) and mother Mary MacEachern. Father's profession was "merchant" which coveres a multitude of sins - he could have been a peddlar or a grocer - goodness knows. I understand MacKillop and MacEachern are not uncommon names in Argyllshire and I wonder if there were any other children - pre 1855 records being so sketchy, i have not been able to trace any others.
Anyone recognise these names and anyone got any idea what this "Glener...." place may be?
Thanks and best regards
Closs

Hello Closs and Welcome to Talking Scot!
In the 1851 census there are some Mackillops living at Glencrúittain More according to the Ancestry transcription. If you search for this on Google Maps it will give you a place called Glencruitten near Oban. It is not far from Kilmore and Kilbride, so I'm hoping this is the right area. Someone who knows the area better than I do is bound to come along if I've got it wrong
All the best,
Sarah
