Kaspersky anti-virus

Post by speleobat2 » Thu Nov 18, 2010 11:26 pm

Hi all,

Bought a new laptop today. :D Toshiba, not Apple.

It came with six months free Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Anyone familiar with this? Any "holes" that I need to fill with other software?

Had a choice of this, Norton or McAfee and I have had less than wonderful experiences with Norton and McAfee so I took this one.

Hello Carol,

Kaspersky has a very good reputation as far as anti virus software is concerned. They don’t seem to get anywhere near the level of flack that is thrown at the other two you mentioned. Whether you need any other security software would depend on the particular version you have and whether it has firewall and spyware protection as well as anti virus.

If it is just basic antivirus then you probably have the standard Windows Firewall running that you can continue to use. I’m not sure how good that is in Windows 7 but there’s always the opportunity to change to something like Zone Alarm if you wish to. Here’s a Kaspersky version comparison http://www.kaspersky.com/compare and here’s a review of the full ‘Internet Security’ version. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/inde ... wID=117094

If it doesn’t include anti spyware, or even if it does, a couple of programs such as MalwareBytes and Spyware Terminator may be useful, not necessarily to run continuously, but to do the occasional scan. I don’t think Kaspersky has a free version. Once the trial runs out you can either choose to subscribe or switch to one of the free AVs such as Avast or AVG. Most of the software I’ve mentioned should be available here http://www.snapfiles.com/ or from your favourite download site.

Happy Toshibaring,
Alan

Thanks Alan!

We bought the computer over in Huntsville, AL which has a large military and NASA presence hence lots of computer people. The very youthful geek who sold us the computer recommended Kaspersky and didn't even say the names of the other two aloud so I was guessing that Kaspersky must be pretty good. Not sure when I'm going on line with the new computer. The local huge phone company that controls our area is saying that I can get high speed internet here at my house from them for a reasonable price so I may call and see if it really can happen. Can't imagine me on the high speed internet!!! Zoooooooooom!

I hope you can Carol. The internet will seem like a wild beast on the other side of the modem instead of a lethargic tortoise. It'll be quite frightening at first but you'll get used to it.

All the best,
Alan

I've had Kaspersky for about four years now recommended by my son who is in I.T. security. He uses it. I've had no problems with it ever and never had to add on anything.

Hi Jen,

Thanks for the comment. I've been busy trying to organize everything before I switch computers this time instead of just dumping everything onto the new one so I'm just getting back to this thread.

Alan,

High speed internet arrives this Friday with wireless in the house as soon as we get back to the city to get a router! \:D/

Turns out the local cable company will hook us up for slightly more money, but lots more power than the monster telecom company in the area. Can't wait!
