Mary Mullen ???

Post by garydevine1995 » Thu Feb 10, 2011 1:54 am

Mary Mullen is my great great great grandmother and i need help with her birth record. she was married to Thomas Logan first then James DI/DEvine (other posts again involve him) in 1857. i dont no when she came to hamilton, scotland so i dont no where she came from in ireland . i know she died in 1893 in hamilton her mother was mary mclee?? and her father was thomas mullen and she was 59 so she would have been born round about 1834. on the 1871 census it just says she was born in Ireland. she has 4 children at this point called john(my line),thomas, margaret and mary. could you help me find her birth pleaseeeeee.

Hi Gary

Irish births prior to 1864 can be very difficult indeed to find. You would really need to know exactly where in Ireland she came from first - in that way you can pin down which church she is likely to have attended, (RC or protestant, and if protestant, which "flavour" ) and then find out if there are any records able to be found for that particular church.

So your first job is to try to find out where in Ireland she was from. This in itself is not always an easy task especially if there are no helpful clues in any census (most times all it will say is "Ireland", but sometimes a place is mentioned). After checking all Scots census she may appear in, if it were me, my next stop would be to establish if there are any poor relief appications which have survived for the area she lived in - many Irish families applied for poor relief as they were often far from home & other family support and found it a struggle to get by. I think the Hamilton poor relief records may be at the Mitchell Library.

Family History research is often hard work, and there are not always easy answers - not at all like the TV programs such as "Who Do You Think You Are" where all the research has already been carried out by a team of researchers, which makes it look like it is all just sitting there and is all easy to find! But doing the research yourself, although time consuming and at times frustrating, can be a good deal more rewarding.

Best wishes
Lesley

Worth looking at all the census entries that involve her as there's a chance that one may give more than just 'Ireland'.

As mentioned, I think they are at the Mitchell library. You would be best to check before heading out on a research trip though.

thank you. i have good news too i looked up mary mullen in 1841 it says she was 4 and i thought itwas her but it was the age range from her brith to death and then i looked her up on the 1851 census and i belive i have found her she is 27 and she has 4 children (sarah 4, mary 2 and james i think could be 8 months hard to tell cause there is a strike through it) already with belive her first husband thomas logan but i dont no why she hasnt kept logan if i is her and it says she is born in county tyrone, irelnad :) and the children were all born in hamilton but i cant find a death cert for thomas. the other thing was when i calulate the year of her death and then a rough date of her birth adn then do the same for the two census on the first census when she was four then she would eb born in 1837 and if i do the 1851 census then she was born in 1824 so there is a big gap but when i look on the 4 year old one she is with her parents who are william and bridget so that means the 1851 is mine :D wooow lol but then in 1861 she isnt there as mary mullen, mary devine or mary divine and then in 1871 she appears with my great great great gandfather james and 4 new children that are his and hers, john 12 thomas 16 or 6 margaret 9 and mary 4 so i dont no where the other chilren have gon but i think they would be well into their late twenties and and perhaps married

That is good news. You were lucky there!

It would still be worth checking the poor law applications beacuse if she applied for relief, then there is a good chance that she will state what townland or even village or farm she came from and may give other family details.

so the mitchell library would be best for the poor relief files and does the micthell library let you access soctlands people for free and ancestory.co.uk for free or is it just one of those.

As far as I am aware, the Mitchell Library would be the place to view the poor relief documents - but check that they hold those for Hamilton before you make the trip.
At the Mitchell Library you can access Ancestry for free.
