Hello
I have been trying to find a naval record for a John C Price in Nat Archives under ADM 188 & 139. These sections recommended by Pandabean as well as "How To" page on NA - so that seemed best way forward, since the "ADM 171 Piece: 123" as stated on the naval medal award roll on Ancestry brings up nothing. However, no joy there either.
Can it be that a sailor who got his full quota of St, V & B medals for WWI does not have any personal record?
I am hoping to find a record that shows place and date of birth which would verify that I am looking at the right person. This search is for John Charles Price b. Pontypool 1884 (again

) and I realise that the "Charles" may not be on his record but I can't find anything under John Price either.
Sorry if this is a bit garbled. Just so fed up that my searching skills seem so poor. Any help gratefully received.
Regards
Lorna

Me again.
I should have said that on the Ancestry naval medal record his No. is given as 9899/DA but entering this number on the NA site comes up with no record either. A bit mystifying
I feel a red face coming on.

Hello Lorna,
I don’t know much about this but I was just looking at Navy casualty lists on the CWGC site and those with letters after the number tend to be Royal Naval Reserve. ADM188 is for the Royal Navy for those who enlisted 1873-1923. It looks as though the RNR possibility would be more likely if he had prior service in the Merchant Marine.
If he was in the RNR I think they are saying here that only some records prior to 1908 have survived and are online. Records after that are in BT377 and can only be seen at Kew.

There is also the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and that’s another kettle of fish. Is there anything on the Medal record that might indicate he was in the RNR or the RNVR?
Although it doesn’t appear to specifically say so the RNR is definitely included in the Ancestry Naval medal database.
Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Thanks again Alan. Have looked up medal record and YES it says RNR at the top of the page which I hadn't noticed before
Will get beavering on that angle now and see if I have more luck. The boy was sent down the pits at 13 after 10 years in the poorhouse. I know I would prefer to be on a ship than down a mine and I would so like this sailor to be my boy but, well we will see.
Thanks again
Lorna
