Siblings of Thomas Jeffrey/Elizabeth Hetherington?

I am trying to find out if my Great Grandparents had any siblings.

My Great Grandfather, Thomas Jeffrey, was born 8 Aug 1848 to William Jeffrey (Jaffray) born 1829 in Musselburgh, Edinburgh and Mary Anne Arnot/t Jeffrey (Jaffray) born 20 July 1825 in Abercorn, Linlithgow.

My Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Hetherington, was born 10 June 1843 in Dunfermline, Fife to Robert Hetherington (Hetherton) born 20 June 1821 in Dunfermline, Fife and Elizabeth (Marshall) Reid born c1816 in Carluke, Lanarkshire.

I have not been successful in finding out if Thomas and Elizabeth had brothers or sisters so if anyone can help it would be most appreciated.

Thomas and Elizabeth emigrated to Canada together in 1871 and finally married in 1900 after 8 children!

Can you tell us where you found the birth date of 8 Aug 1848 for Thomas, please?
And 10 June 1843 in Dunfermline for Elizabeth - what was the source of the date?
Also, I'm probably being thick here, but what do you mean by "Elizabeth (Marshall) Reid"? Is Marshall a middle name or a previous surname?

Do you happen to know which church these families attended? e.g. Church of Scotland, Free Church, Baptist, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Episcoplalian etc? Post 1855 marriages (in Scotland) in the famliy may give some clues on this.

Have you checked any of the Scottish census material to see if they are listed there with siblings?

Hello Lesley,
I got the dates from the LDS site and Ancestry as well as from family history.
Elizabeth (Marshall) Reid refers to Marshall as her maiden name and Reid as her first marriage name.
I would think they were probably Church of Scotland as they followed the Presbyterian faith here in Canada.

My eye caught your post because we too have a distant Granny, who went by the single Christian name of MARSHAL/L and thought that uncommon.

I'm not a member of RootsChat, but out of interest I did a name search through the back door (so to speak) and there is quite a few threads discussing a number of people named Thomas, and William, JAFFRAY (Jaffrey). Though they probably are not yours, they may help in the elimination process, if you have not come across the posts before.

My method of finding the posts was to use GOOGLE Advanced Search, and placing William JAFFRAY in the SEARCH WORDS box and then on the vary last option box typing the full web site address eg;_

www . RootsChat . com Then the search icon.

Thomas and Elizabeth's birth dates are shown on the Canadian Census records.

The Scottish Census records show only Thomas living with his parents in 1851 and 1861. William and Mary are on their own in 1871 so it looks as though there were no other living children.

Coincidently there is a marriage of a William Jeffrey to a Mary Ann Arnott in 1844 not to be confused with your couple Willam and Mary Arnot who married in 1848.

Elizabeth is proving harder to find - have you found her on any Scottish census? I see Robert Hetherton married Elizabeth Marshall in 1842.

I see what appears to be wee Elizabeth's birth in 1868 at Dunfermline - have you looked at this for an address?

This looks like it might be the rest of the family. You would have to check the original on SP to see if Elizabeth's middle initial wasn't an M instead of the W that Ancestry has transcribed.

Elizabeth b. 1843 is on the 1851 census on SP with her parents, sister Agnes 4 yrs. and step-brother John (I think!) I couldn't find them on Ancestry at all! They are using the name Hetherton. I searched for Eli*abeth Heth* to find the family.
