Help wtih reading MC.....

Post by stephlangan » Sat Aug 27, 2005 7:13 pm

Hi

I just uploaded a MC for a great-great uncle called William McDonald, and I am having a spot ot trouble reading - the brides name is Isabella Crannie but the rest I am having trouble with.

If anyone feels like a challenge I would appreciate another set of eyes having a look.

Thanks

Steph

Hope I did this right! I think the image can ve viewed here:

Hi

This one is a nightmare

I would say that William McDonald is a Mason Journeyman and Isabella possibly Crannie is a Rag Store Worker. He lives at 4 Graham Street, Glasgow and she at 24 Priory Street. His parents are William John McDonald General Estate Laourer and Rose Anne McDonald MS McCannachie/McConnachie deceased. Hers are James ?Crannie Blacksmith Journeyman and Catherine Crannie MS McMaster. The priest was James Nolan who also witnessed the signatures of the couple and the witnesses were Robert Pontin and Mary (or could be Harry) Lee.

I'm struggling a bit with the names of the bride and her parents but could be Crannie though on Mum's it looks more like Cairney.

Sorry not much help.

Hi Steph

This one is very difficult to make out but I do think the names of Isabella's parents are James Crainey and Catherine McNairn and this is their possible marriage from batch M119201:

JAMES CRANEY & CATHERIN McNAIRN
International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 02 OCT 1874 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Am still working on the others.....and the IGI site is throwing a headfit at the moment  .....will keep trying......

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Steph,

Jean and Anne are doing a fine job.
I hope you have sent a contact form to SP as you will be sent a copy of the original entry.
Meanwhile I think this may be where they were married -

http://www.sacredheartbridgeton.20m.com/index.html

The Parish History section mentions a Fr. Nolan.

Thank you all for you help..I will contact SP and see if I can get a clearer copy...And you are bang in with the website...almost all my relatives between 1850 and 1926 were married at the Sacred Heart. Next time I am home I am going to take a walk over from the Gorbals and see it. We always thought that all the family was married from St Francis so this has been a surprise in the family. It looks that a wonderful Chapel and its great to see its still standing.

Thanks for all the assistance

Steph

Just had a closer look with the magnifying lens..I find it strange that all of Williams brothers and sister could write but he has signed this with an X..and he was the youngest of the family and was born in Scotland while some of the older ones were born in Ireland but they all signed their name on their MC. Funny that.!!??

Thanks for the pictures Annette...if I have my bearing right, the flats that are off in the distance in linke with the chapel are Cumberland Street in the Gorbals and the ones off to the right would be Sandyfield Road...does that sould right...the Cumberland Street flats are due to be demolished.

My dad is going to like to see this. Thanks again

Greetin's
That is quite a hard cert to make out.
The East end of Glasgow is my home turf.

And I have visited Brampton, Steph.
It is just like living in Mount Flo, here in the Sou'side.

What about this for the family on the 1881 census? it is the right area.

The Sacred Heart School used to be in Pirn Street which was originally Graham Street,
I think it is just a housing estate now.
The site Annette of Glega pals i one of my favorites.
Check out the streets of Glasgow on it.

Hi Davie

yes that is the family...Thomas age 7 is my GG grandfther...he married the daughter of Archiibald Stevens and Mary McAvoy that you all have been providing me help with for the last month. Still no closer to proviing that Archie is not an alien.

I have had a lot of luck on the Glasgow Pals website. I was able to locate cousins on my dad's side. We knew they existed but they had no clue about us. My grandfather Michael Langan is actually buried in their family grave in Dalbeth Cemetery (Skivington). My two aunts in Glasgow have met up with their new cousins. Small world. I haven't looked to closely at many of the picture which now I will.

Hope you enjoyed your time in Brampton!!! Its quite a nice place to live and just close enough to downtown Toronto if you want a night out, and it really hasn't been affected by all the violence in Toront ...yet.

Thanks

Steph
