Hi,
I have an ancestor named Isabel Cowie b. 1776 in Alloa, who is proving to be a mystery at the moment
She married David Gillespie in 1796 in Alloa, and by 1823 he married again to Mary McMillan, but Isabel appears in the 1841 census whith David in Alloa in Izzat St. His second wife Mary was still alive at this time (she died in 1856). I've tried searching for Isabel's death (1841 onwards) as she was 65 at the time, but can't find her.
There is also a Robert Gillespie at the same address, and has the same occupation as David (Carter) but I've never heard of him before. I've tried to find out who he is (possibly another son) but have drawn a blank.
Any advice is much appreciated
Regards,
Daryl

The best advice I can offer is to look at David Gillespie the carter's death entry in 1861 to see what it says about his wife. How do you know he is the David Gillespie who married Isabel Cowie?
In my opinion it is highly unlikely that the David Gillespie who married Isabella Cowie at Alloa is the same person who married Mary McMillan at Kilmallie or do you know something different.
Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
David's death cert. in 1867, mentions his daughter Jane Hogg as informant and also that he was a widower of Isabella Cowie.
Mary McMillan was David's 2nd wife, and mother to my gggrandfather William Gillespie b.1824 in Fort William.
In all David had 19 children

and died at the ripe old age of 92.
Regards,
Daryl

Hi Daryl,
As I thought there are 2 David Gillespies born at Alloa around the same time.
1851 (your family)
Address - Cross Keys, Kilmadock
David Gillespie 74 Labourer
Mary Gillespie 46 wife born Invernesshire (since Mary McMillan/Gillespie died at Kilmadock I would think this is her)
Hugh Gillespie 22 born Invernesshire
Mary Gillespie 20
Janet Gillespie 16
Eliz Gillespie 14
James Gillespie 12
Peter Gillespie 8
David Gillespie 5
1851
Address King street, Alloa
David Gillespie 72 Carter
James Gillespie 24
A search at SP shows 2 appropriate deaths - one in 1861 (who I suspect is the father of William and was married to Mary McMillan) and one (that you have of the carter who was married to Isabella Cowie) in 1867.
Hope this makes sense.
Regards,
Annette

Hi,
I don't think the David who died in 1861 is my ancestor, as he would have been only 88 years old at the time of his death. Does his death cert. mention Mary McMillan as his widow ? what were the names of his parents ?
I would still like to find out when Isabella died though, it's very frustrating not being able to find anything out. . .
Regards,
Daryl

Hi Daryl,
If the David Gillespie who died in 1861 is the one who was married to Mary McMillan then you wouldn't have to worry about Isabella Cowie as she isn't your ancestor.
I'm sorry I don't have enough credits to look at that 1861 death entry.
Regards,
Annette
