i have tryed looking for a peter sinclair born around 1851 to peter sinclair and christian donaldson in creiff and i cant find him. i am starting to pull my hair out because i cant find him at all in creiff but on censuses it says he was born in creiff. help me please.

Hi Gary,

It may be that the record does not exist, or does not survive. Before 1855, records of birth, marriage and death were not statutory. They were kept by the churches, predominantly the (Established) Church of Scotland at that time. The OPRs that are in ScotlandsPeople were the Parochial Registers, kept by the Church of Scotland. The records in these are predominantly of Church of Scotland families. Even if the family were Church of Scotland, it was not compulsory for their events to be registered there.

aww i see its just i found it weird how all his brothers and sisters were recorded but he wasrnt i mean his brother mungo was born in 1854 and he is recorded so maybe they just never done him then. thanks anyway

I couldn't find Peter Sinclair born to Peter Sinclair and Christian Donaldson 1848-1853, but did find Peter Donaldson born to Christi*n Donaldson in 1851 in the OPR. That may be worth a look.
Do you have a record of Peter and Christian's marriage?
In the OPRs there is a marriage record of Peter Sinclair and Christi*n Donaldson in June 1853, but nothing before that.

It may be possible that Peter Donaldson was raised as Peter Sinclair's son, after he had married the boy's mother, just a thought.

i do have that cerificate they were married in muthill in perth. see i thought maybe they both had the child before they were married and then then got married and he took his name so i will look up peter donaldson 1851 then.

i have found 2 of them so i dont no what one to click on i have only wrote peter donaldson because when i write christian/christina/christin/christen nothing comes up
