OPR tip.....

Post by Marie Svedahl » Mon Aug 29, 2005 12:15 am

I have been searching the OPR film records for Inveresk with Musselburgh in Midlothian during the Napoleonic time period - roughly 1792 to 1814 - and I have found many soldiers being married there or having children baptized. To me it appears that different regiments were stationed there (near Edinburgh) for a time before being sent off elsewhere. For example in 1798 many men of the Shropshire Militia were married at Musselburgh, some were md. by the Chaplain of the Royal Glasgow Regiment; in 1799, several from the 1st N.B. Militia; in 1803 there were men from the Forforshire Regiment and also Dumfrieshire Militia. There were several other regiments mentioned but I only jotted these down for an example.

The marriages and some of the baptisms were on the LDS reel #1067756. There would likely be more baptisms on the previous film but I haven't looked at it as yet.

I couldn't help but think if anyone is looking in the home parish for any of these marriages or baptisms, they might never find them unless they do a country-wide search on the IGI. And without the added information that only the actual records tell, about the man being in the Militia, they might ignore this IGI hit because "their person" was supposed to be in some other part of Scotland.

I did find some marriages & baptisms for my Fowler, Liddel, Montgomery & Cossar families on the reel so I was satisfied. None of mine were in any of the militia units that I mentioned.

Hope this helps someone.

That's a great tip & if my memory serves me well there were Napoleonic Prisoners near Penicuik too-maybe Roslin?
As one side of my family were born/raised in glencorse another army barracks then maybe the same applies there & to other garrison towns/areas in Scotland.

Leslie Harris, harris4@compuserve.com, or 35 Kings Avenue, Longniddry, East Lothian, EH32 0QN, has produced a 194 page listing of christenings, marriages and burial for the period 1795 - 1815 for East Lothian plus Inveresk (Musselburgh). Musselburgh is in present day East Lothian but was then in Midlothian.

There's two list, one sorted by soldier;s name, the other sorted by regiment.

Although I've looked at this publication several times, I think that I've just discovered why my 3g grandfather moved from Aberdeenshire to Edinburgh, - he was in the Aberdeenshire Militia and I hadn't realised that they'd been in Inveresk at one period.

The list of regiments makes fascinating reading........................ Note that this list only includes regiments whose soldiers appear in the OPRs. If there were no wives with a regiment then those regiments won't appear unless some soldiers marreid locally.

There will be some duplication in that the militia was disbanded in 1803 (?) before being reraised a few years later, when the names and areas may not have been quite the same

Re: OPR tip..... Fencible Regiments

Post by ROBB@LOGIE » Mon Jan 17, 2011 1:57 pm

I too have a member of my family with four children born in Musselburgh with Inveresk.
Peter Rob is recorded as a solider in the 2 fencible regiment. I believe he is the Peter Rob born in Logie parish near Stirling in 1770 to Andrew Rob and Sophia Ker.
There is no record of his marriage anywhere - although the mother of his children is recorded as Frances 'Fanny' Logan.
He had four children christened in Musselburgh; Andrew (1795), William (1797), Peter (1805) and Andrew (1808-11)
His only daughter Sophia was christened in Stirling in December 1799. Were the 2nd Fencible regiment there in late 1799?
I've had trouble in working out what regiment the 2nd might have been, and who would have recruited in the Logie area.
Any help in locating what regiment he was in and where I could find the records would be most welcome.

Hello Steven, and Welcome to TalkingScot.

If there’s no mention of horses then the 2nd Fencible Regiment would be the Second (or Sutherland) Fencible Regiment of Infantry. See True Briton (London), Wednesday, June 14, 1797. http://i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad28 ... cibles.jpg Right click and take a copy of this as it won’t be there forever.

Hopefully, in this book preview, you’ll be able to see page 5 of “Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.” I’m not sure previews always work the same way. The 2nd and 3rd Fencible Regiments appear to have been disbanded April 1799, possibly the 2nd was earlier. Many of the Sutherland Fencibles ended up in the 93rd Regt. of Foot. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=lzt ... ss&f=false

Records of Fencible Regiments should be at the National Archives at Kew.

All the best,
Alan

Alan
Many thanks. I had looked at this regiment some time ago - but I couldnt reconcile my Peter Rob from nr Stirling with this Highland regiment. However, I just found out that a Petter Robi married Fanny Loban in Inverness in October 1793. (No wonder I couldnt find it before) Checked the original and it is Peter Rob, Soldier who married Fanny Loban/Logan. There were a few other soldiers on the same page, but no more information was given sadly.
Next move would be for me to get to Kew - Many thanks again

Steven
