Hi,
I'm trying to find the 5 children of John Hogg (Carpenter) & his wife Jane Gillespie, who died in Alloa.
John & Jane married on 7th March 1830 in Alloa, but I can't find any children born after that date

.
Jane died in 1870, and John too 7 months later aged 70. On their gravestone it mentions 5 children but not their names.
Any ideas ?
Regards,
Daryl

Hi Daryl
Any sign of any children with them in the 1841 or 1851 census?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
Not that I can see. I've tried Ancestry for the 1840/51 census, but without success.
Also had a look on family search & Scotlands People

Hi Daryl:
Searching on ScotlandsPeople using the following, pulls up 5 births:
Surname: Hogg
Forename: none entered
Parent: John Hogg
Parent: Jane
Sex: both
Time frame: 1 Jan 1830 - 31 Dec 1854
Adding anything to Jane, brings the hits down to 0
Adding Alloa or Clackmannan in either location fields, also brings the hits to 0
Adding John as a child's name, brings up 2 hits. Would they all have died in infancy between the census?
It may be worthwhile to look at the summary page to see if you want to pursue that group of 5.
Frances

Hi Frances,
I had a look in Scotland's People at the summary page matches, but they weren't my ancestors I'm afraid. It may be that all 5 died in infancy and that's why they don't show up on any of the census'.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Daryl

Hello Daryl,
Here’s a page from the 1840s survey of Scottish Parochial Registers. It adds in relation to Alloa: “Parents are becoming more and more careless as to the registration of their children, the want of which is frequently felt by individuals of every rank.”
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=aCE ... AJ&pg=PA41
Especially probably by genealogists.
All the best,
Alan

I'm not sure if you are missing Jane/John in 1841/51 or the children? I saw in 1861 that John was listed as a ship's carpenter so wondered if he was away for the earlier census. I found this one in 1851 (if you haven't seen it) - which may be Jane - on the IGI there is a Jean Gillespie with father David baptised 1797 - her age seems to vary a little. If this is her, there are a number of siblings - finding them on the census may/may not be useful?
1851 Primrose St Alloa Clackmannanshire
Jean Hogg 50 wife female born Alloa Clackn Ship Carpenter wife
No-one listed with her but perhaps the image may give a better result
1841 all I find is a Jean Hogg 43, living with a William Hogg and family - cockpen, Midlothian - not born in county
Edit - only other find in 1835 on the new family search, unnamed Hogg born/died South leith 10 Aug 1835, father John
