Morton John - Scotlands People.....

Post by Margaret » Mon Aug 29, 2005 11:21 pm

Hello all
I have just had my first adventure out to Scotlands People and also my first big find. What a wonderful tool this web site is for us Aussies living on the other side of the world, to be able to get cert ect in seconds. My problem is that I can find my GG Grandad's brother but there is no mention of him anywhere William was born in 1859, my GDad John Morton would have been born around 1852. His parents John and Christina were married in Cathcart and there is record of them. Was it usual for families not to register their children. Hope someone can help me please as I would love to find his record.
Cheers
Margaret

Hi Margaret,

I had a quick check on the online IGI - no sign of any other children to John Morton & Christina Campbell, other than the brother in 1859.

Unfortunately pre-1855, many births went unrecorded, as it was not obligatory to have the child baptized. In most cases the Old Parochial Registers (OPRs) recorded baptisms rather than births. Baptisms that took place in a church other than the Established Church of Scotland should have been notified to the Established Church of Scotland to be recorded in the OPRs, but all too often this did not happen. There was often a charge made for making an entry in the OPRs. Some could not afford the charge, some who attended another church would not pay this to another church as a principle, some parish churches were not good at their record keeping - there is a few examples of why pre-1855 births (and marriages) often went unrecorded.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello Andrew
Many thanks for your reply, and now it makes it a little clearer and harder to find our folk :( . I have actually done a search on Scotlands people for a John Morton and just put in Campbell and there is one, so when I re-charge the credits I will go look. Maybe just maybe he was born before the marriage.
Once again thanks
Cheers
Margaret
