Pollock

Post by MrsD73 » Wed Apr 20, 2011 6:48 pm

Have wondered this for sometime now

My gg Uncle Andrew Peacock Pollock d. 1922 in a mining accident. His young son of the same name had died days earlier @ 9 months of age. Andrew was married to Jane Waddell Anderson. I would like to know what happened to Jane as she seems to have disappeared. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Maureen

Hello Maureen and [TS_welcome]
What year was Jane born? There are 4 deaths for a Jane Anderson, other surname Pollock on ScotlandsPeople, but without knowing her birth year and approximate area it is hard to narrow it down. Have you already checked out the most likely ones?

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

From ‘The Scotsman’, December 8, 1922.
BRUSHER KILLED IN A COATBRIDGE PIT.—Early yesterday morning, while Andrew P. Pollock, a brusher, was engaged at work in one of the roads in Rosehall No. 14 Pit (R. Addie & Son’s Collieries, Ltd.) he was caught in a heavy fall of stone from the roof and crushed against the wall. While being conveyed to the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, in an ambulance wagon, he succumbed. His home was at Stirling Street, Airdrie.

Death age on SP appears to be 35.

His death does not appear to have been recorded on the Scottish Mining website.

Thanks, Alan. That helps.

In that case, never mind the Scottish death records. I believe she went to Canada on the SS Duchess of Atholl, sailing from Greenock on 3 Nov 1928.
Jane Pollock, a widow, age 37, born Airdrie. Her passage was paid by the government and she is going over as a domestic, her employer the Canadian Govt. Hostel in Montreal.
Her nearest relative in Scotland being her sister, Mrs. Janet Keenan, at 47 Kippen Street, Airdrie. She is accompanied by 3 children, but they are not named.

All the best,
Sarah

Okay, found the children. Hope these make sense to you, Maureen.

There are three Pollock children on the passenger list for the same boat, but on a different page from Jane. They are John age 12, Jane age 9 and Elizabeth age 8, all born Airdrie. Do these sound correct to you? Their "relationship" is nephew & niece. They are leaving their Aunt Janet Thomson of 47 Thippin St, Airdrie and going to their Aunt Kitty Pollock of 77 Mullen St. Point St, Charles, Montreal. Under "passport" it says "see sheet 40, line 3". Sheet 40, line 3 is the entry for Jane.

Cheers,
Sarah
